What rifle do people think is better, the AK47 or the AR15? Why?

Or do you have an even better suggestion?

This has been gone over a million times. By far the AK is much preferred over the heavy and cumbersome AR with bling attached. Besides, ever try carrying a 100 rds of .223 ammo with that heavy rifle?? I'll stick to my proven AK thank you very much......;)

And here we see the problem.

(But 100 rounds of 7.62x39 would not really be that bad...)

I say try them both, I may be moving to the AK soon, after trying the AR.

If you truly want to know - you could have searched the forum for that information. It is a question that has been asked million different ways on a million different forums. Its the same type of question as "what's better, a fork or a spoon?". It really depends on what conditions you would use it in - even though you can get by with using either to get the job done in similar situations. Follwoing the same analogy - a knife however would definitely be used under specialized conditions as compared to the fork or the spoon - like a sniper rifle as compared to the AK47 or AR15. You can refer to the threads below for starters.

Before the boneheads go to deep into which phallic symbol is better, here is the main thing to remember. Chocolate or Vanilla? People can say proven this, big that, heavy this, accuracy that.

1. To many companies make to many quality, and poor quality versions to compare in general, or specifically fairly.

2. Ammo Ammo Ammo. The biggest issue with both is putting the right round the gun. If you put the wrong one in you will get poor results.

3. Personal appeal. Chocolate, or Vanilla?

People generally who say one breaks all the time don't know crap about what they are talking about. While accuracy at range can be a issue because of wind, another may have issues because the bullet just wasn't designed with accuracy in mind. Also the whole ones really fragile is BS. Clean your weapon take care of it and it will serve fine.

Purchasing either one will turn you into an instant marksmen and war hero. You will have the upper hand when approaching my LP/OP from 500 yards away where my highly trained self waits with a Springfield 1903 and a lowly 5 shot magazine of .30-06

No just kidding, you'll get wiped out--but please pick a high quality AK or AR so that when I confiscate it I have something nice for my collection.

I have both but by this point I have so many different boxes of ammo that I am consolidating my "core" SHTF guns for easy of ammo hoarding. I'm selling off a few weapons (SKS, SKS-M and AK in 7.62x39 among them) and am going to keep my current AR-15 and get another one that I'll go the SBR route with.

I can literally carry almost 2x the ammo for the same weight with 5.56 as opposed to the 7.62x39, and can also shoot the more common .223 rem when my supply of the good stuff runs out.

Only AK I am keeping is my Saiga 12ga that will be getting the short barrel treatment when I get around to paying my elective $200 tax lol.

Oh, and of course my Remington 700 in .308 for distance work.

Same here,,Im selling my older Colt AR & buying 2 RRA 223,,one reason I already have 5k rnds, another, i just prefer the AR style and wanna be different from those goon came jockeys. Ill have a female shooting one of them if needed. Also, have 2 9mm glocks, 2 38 as backups..

I can't believe someone is doing this mis-comparison again.

OK to start off with doing a comparison like this is like trying to match up a Corvette and a VW Beetle.
If you want to do a comparison between the AR & AK do it on the AK74.
If you put both guns on some good quality ammo the AK74 will hold it's own against the AR.
My AK74 will shoot just as accurate as my AR with quality ammo.
Now I will agree the AR is easer to do mag changes because of the bolt hold open.
And the sights on the AK74 suck at any distance more than 100yds, that is why I have scopes on my AK and AR.

Or better still do your comparison between an AK & AR of the same cal. like both of .223 or .308.
When you remove the difference in ammo you will remove the difference between the guns.

I am by far no gun expert, but I do own couple rifles, I think (and this is just me, my opinion) that if your going to buy an AK, Keep it an AK, putting a side folder, underfolder, is OK if thats what you need for functionality/conceal-ability, With an AR platform, They are fun and easy to mess around with (build), And if I want to shoot my .450 thumper, on a two stage trigger, well all I gotta do is remove 2 pins, and slap on the upper, couple quick rounds for scope zero, and have fun, if I want to go back to .223 or 6.8 spc, same thing... As far as I know (and I dont know much, but you cant do this with an AK, maybe change barrels, like I said not sure.)

Although if you can get a good price on an AK, I would say jump on it, because there not really making any more of them.

With both of them there are way too many variations between the rifles within there own realms of being, to compare the two to each other with out knowing what calibers, models and manufacturers your looking at buying.

I would suggest the same as JoeKan, buy one of each, normally the value of guns, doesn't decrease a whole lot, unless you sell em to a pawn shop or retail store.

Also one thing to keep in mind, from my personal experience, is that, MY AK, will eat any ammo I put into it.

MY AR, will not...

I like em both.

Do we have to have another AK vs AR thread? Every single gun forum, since day one has had at least one of these threads weekly since the day they opened. In fact, it's likely that it was the first thread to appear on their site. All you have to do is read any of the thousands of AK vs AR threads to get the same arguements over and over.

Personally, I own several of both. It's strictly a matter of preference. Nothing more. Though the fanboys of each can invent a thousand reasons why they think the other gun sucks.

Here are my pro's and cons as it applies to me

AK47:
- reliability: a decent example of an AK47 will run and feed under almost any conditions, isnt picky about ammo and will be less prone to parts breakage than most any gun available.

- Ergonomics: I am left handed and it seems to work well for me.

- magazines: steel surplus magazines can take a beating and keep running just like the AK.
- 7.62x39 ammo cost/effectiveness: You can stock plenty of "shtf" ammo for cheaper, without worrying too much about bullet design. There are optimal rounds, but there are few "bad rounds" to be found an AK47. Also offers better barrier penetration.

-maintenance: extremely low maintenance gun. Its not finicky. There are not many springs or small parts to lose or break, and it doesnt require much lubrication

AR-15
- Weight: usually lighter than an AK47 if not overloaded with rails and doodads. Ammo and magazines also lighter

-accuracy: round and rifle design inherently more accurate than the AK47 action and chambering

- modularity: can be configured and accessoried easily. There are a ton of common parts

- commonality: ammo and magazines are common

- .223/556 round characteristics: flatter shooting, lower recoil and longer range accuracy (not terminal effectiveness necessarilly however)

- ergonomics for most shooters

For fighting baddies out to 300 yards either does the job well. You have to do your job and train.

For me, I prefer the AK47 because of the simple operation, low maintenance/reliability less small parts. And I also like the 7.62x39 round
