New member here and I was wondering if anyone thought that the Barnes MRX bullet might have any ability as an AP bullet. Specifically the 130 grain out of a 270 Winchester, 24in barrel, 1:12 twist, 5R rifling (the T/C Venture). Is that tungsten-based core going to have a chance at pushing through some body armor?

hmmmm.....

I think penetrators are better against living targets that might be behind something.

I'm pretty sure that a penetrator would be better actually.

The steel triangle tip under the copper/whatever metal coating will break through the object, then the lead behind it will deform and act like a normal bullet :)

This is all speculations based on the 5.56 bullets i found.... Thats what their explanation seems to say ;)

I have a feeling that the steel tip would seriously ruin the accuracy and probably spin out of balance and fling itself off the round. Either way, it would be too small and light to be much of a penetrator. An AP bullet is specifically engineered as such. True AP has a penetrator that is a large percentage of it's core.

Also, if you're talking about adding it to loaded ammo, the added weight may raise pressures dangerously.

Why are you considering armor? If it is because someone might break in with it on?

Your 270 can already be loaded up far beyond the spec of most armor that people can get. An 06' or 300 winmag or just about any high powered rifle will go right through just about anything out there.

A standard pistol, AK or AR (etc.) round can be stopped by modern armor under most hits and most angles.

That is all just from what I have collected over the years from others. I have never been shot in any armor so I can't tell you from personal experience.
