Architects want to know: What's the perfect zombie safe house?:D:

A real-deal architectural firm is holding a contest to see who can design the most effective residence for surviving the undead apocalypse—and letting you vote on the winner.

I bet we could come up with a real doosie if we all put our heads together.:thumb:

CinderBlock construction
Steel security shutters on all ground floor windows
with security glass aswell
Steel door construction with steal framing and a 4 point locking system
underground garage that leads away from the house to exit with proper security there as well
couple small balconys on upper floors so the kids can practice head shots with their .22's

These were the 2010 Rules:

WELCOME to the First Annual Zombie Apocalypse Safe House Competition!

In a zombie apocalypse, a widespread (usually global) rise of zombies hostile to human life engages in a general assault on civilization. Victims of zombies may become zombies themselves. This causes the outbreak to become an exponentially growing crisis: the spreading “zombie plague/virus” swamps normal military and law enforcement organizations, leading to the panicked collapse of civilian society until only isolated pockets of survivors remain, scavenging for food and supplies in a world reduced to a pre-industrial hostile wilderness. Due Date: 11/08/10 (see contact below for submitting your entry)

Judging: The judge is TBD, however each project will be judged on how well they address the program issues which will be up to the discretion of the judge. Extra credit will be considered for thinking outside of the “box” and addressing issues not brought up in the program.

Program Issues to Address:
1. How many people can you fit in your safe house?
2. How are you handling power, potable water, and waste?
3. How are you handling access to your safe house?
4. How many days do you plan to stay in your safe house, and how much food and water are you providing?
5. How will you escape in the event of a zombie intrusion?
6. How will you keep zombies out of your safe house?

Other spaces to consider:
- entry
- weapons storage
- chemical storage
- bed rooms/bunks
- food pantry
- holding cell
- quarantine cell
- tool and material storage
- quarantine showers

Site:
The site selection is open ended and up to you. (the world is your canvas)

Budget:
No budget restriction is applied. Your safe house is human civilization’s last hope!

My co-worker brought up "I am Legend"/"The Omega Man" zombie. Very tough as well.

Lets work around the "I am Legend" zombie and see what we can come up with.

Give me some direction so I can start drawing it up.

First up will be location, i.e. mountains, swamp. plains, city, etc.
then
Above or below ground.

How many people to house?

After this we can figure construction type. Not all ideas will be used but some will be implemented in the final design.

If we do this I will need to find a way to organize it all.

i would want some way to kill the zombies without wasting ammo. so i would build a fire escape type balcony all around the exterior, about 10 ft high, with metal grating on the sides and floor. every couple feet the grates would have a 4x4 inch opening. i would then be able to use my spud bar for something other than building fence. also getting out could be tricky so i would want the roof to be made so that i could plant food up there. also the gutters would need to run into a water collection container. and for getting out in a hurry i would want a large draw bridge so if i got to go i can drop it and drive my dump truck with snow plow out.
