Ouch. I have been seriously contemplating a milk cow, and we are still under $5/gal!

I think in a year or so, we may have to make it happen. Kid #4 will be here and about ready to switch. We already go thru about 3 gallons a week! So much work though.

 

3.28/g for 2% (low fat). WalMart in Southern California.

 

You guys are paying a premium price for local products, organic, etc.

It's about $3.50 a gallon here for no name brand whole milk.

I recall a thread where I saw that Mel's Thinking It Over said that she bought whole milk and added water to it. That's pretty smart. Whole milk is the same price as 2% or skim milk. Just save your old milk jugs, add whole milk ans water to whatever strengths you desire.

Do note that 1/2 gallon sizes are one nickle (that is 5 cents!) less than a full gallon of milk here, so check prices before thinking that a half gallon will make you a gallon plus. Use a gallon to make 2-3 gallons for the best price.

 

Our whole milk is usually .30-.70 a gallon more expensive.

And the ~$4.50/gal is off brand 2%

Milk is $2.12 / gallon where I live in Idaho. Tastes exactly the same as organic, just doesn't have the morally superior 'organic' label lol.

 

I bought Luvel, which was actually bought out by Prairie Farms Dairy out of Illinois. It was not organic.

I don't buy organic... I buy the Kleinpeter brand that is made here in Louisiana also. I refuse to buy Walmart brand milk.... Heaven knows all what they put in that crud.
Same brand at Walmart is $7.99. Seems as though they over price it to make you buy their brand.

 

I believe you are right about that. Here they seem to over price the "good stuff" so people will buy the other.

I also question where some of that milk comes from and what's in it.

Some of it has the "real dairy" emblem on it and a lot of it doesn't.

 

$4 for a half gallon of organic and about $4 for a gallon of regular around here.

 

I see it anywhere between 3 dollars and change to 5 dollars and change depending on the brand.

 

A couple of hours ago, I paid $2.97/ gal. at Kroger, on sale this week. The regular price is about $3.18, I think. It was the same price for whole, 2%, !% and 1/2% as well as for chocolate milk. The limit was three gallons with an additional $10 purchase. My Kroger has this deal quite frequently.

 

We spent a week in Allen, TX area this summer and we found that a lot of things, excluding property, was way cheaper than here. BTW, we loved Texas. My girls are begging us to move there.

I will start watching for those sales at Kroger. I wonder, does skim milk freeze well?

$2.99 is standard for me for 1%. I can get it for about $2.50 at the local wholesale club, but that's not close enough to frequent regularly.

California we're paying around $4 per gallon.

 

Nothing. I stopped drinking milk when I found out about BGH. The amount of puss that is in your milk.

That was a bad day, I loved a nice ice cold glass of milk. I do have a goat to milk If I want fresh milk. The goat milk is pretty much what I would expect, it's milk. The difference is that the fresh milk has more fat, ie: more calories.
