I see a mother/daughter team selling them near my house and have been kinda craving some but don’t want to spend an arm or a leg, last time I priced burritos they were like $16-$18, I’d love to score some tamales for $2 like they used to be but I’m doubting it and am actually scared to stop and ask
That seems really high.

Although, I don't have someone who sells tamales locally, I have a Hispanic coworker who sells breakfast burritos (sausage, egg, cheese, onions, peppers) for $4, and lunch burritos (chicken/beef, rice, onions, peppers, cheese, sauce) for $5.

I buy from her frequently, to support her, and because it's very good.

I used to have a neighbor who made the best lumpia I've ever had. She even made an orange sauce that was out of this world.

Maybe NYMIN, or e.honey.m can weigh in.

We get some really good home made tamales for $16 by the dozen and add in a tip. Normally split them up between the corn and banana leaf wrappers with pork and beef, sometimes cheese filled. I really love these as they have some decent spice and strip of carrot and potato inside with the meat. A tamale is one of my favorite foods when I want a treat. Hot or cold no matter to me. I love those things.

Sometimes the local Catholic churches will sell them as a fund raiser especially around Christmas if you don't know anyone locally. All the congregation women get together for a huge tamale fest and then sell them in the community.

Round here you can usually score some parking lot tamales for anywhere from 12-15$ dz. Always topnotch and authentic, usually mother/ daughter team working the lot. On occasion you will get the male sporting a gold chain aggressively selling them business to business and window to window in the parking lot, these jokers start out at 20$ a dz but will usually take 15$ to not lose the sale.

Usually if they have red and green salsa tied off in sandwich baggies chances are they will be good.

Sometimes, you just need to treat yourself. Go get them. You obviously like tamales. Yes, they are probably a few bucks more, than they were last year, but so is the cost everything else. Go get them. You deserve them. Pay for them and don’t look back. Just put a little Tabasco on them and chow down. I’m partial to the green Tabasco. It’s not as warm as the red.

Now he's worried that he can't afford a tamale.

My, how fickle the finger of financial fortune can be.

Some people can't stop worrying about saving for their old age even when they're already 90. I had an aunt like that, and my older brother is tending the same way. Pinching pennies is a mental habit they just can't shake that ends up only making some heir happy at the windfall (or the government if they haven't got any heirs).

A cooking skill I'm glad I learned.
