open cans

 

Had to laugh.
Some time back, I was working a gig, when a youngster (under 30) asked if I had a can opener - dunno, maybe he thought OFs carried such a thing. (I do, a P-51 is part of my key chain bundle)

I asked what he really needed. He wanted to open a coffee can. I pointed to his belt - he was carrying a leatherman tool. (IT Shop - he used it to open boxes)

I told him he already had a can opener. The look of disbelieve was priceless.

Rather than laugh - I took him in the kitchen and showed him how his can opener worked.
He was nice enough to bring a me a cup of coffee after it brewed.

Moral of the story - you should know how every tool you own/carry works, even if just a Swiss Army knife. Also, if you have not seen something done, it may be a mystery. Don't laugh or mock - demonstrate.
Makes for a better workplace....

 

I jabbed one of those into my hand in Brasil about 4 years ago, they still use them.

 

I use m-38s alot. Tap er one or two inside tubs, barrels and in gear, including med kits. Bought 100 in a bulk buy at Sportsmans Guide online.

 

Same here except I got the bigger p-51's, been giving quite a few away.

 

I was once asked if I had a can opener while on night shift. I asked him if he knew what a P38 was. His eyes lit up, turns out he is an old Marine. Always have a P51 on my keys for just such emergencies.

 

I was especially wondering about that sharp slider deal on the stem.

 

Its to open cans of peaches, milnot (milk), pears, meats, and etc. Any can, before pop open lids were developed for the millennia's. This item helped open the west up to civilization. Sealed cans were developed in mid 1800's, but nobody had a way to open them.

 

It would make one heck of a scary bayonet. lol

I've used them before and may have one in my stash of junk in the garage. It takes a bit of finesse to open a can with one and not stab yourself.

 

Opens cans and bottles, pry off lids. The sharp thing on the stem is for puncturing cans of liquid (like evap. .milk cans). You push it in and rotate the handle to expand the hole as desired.

 

Like some of you, I always have a P-38 or a P-51 handy. But you can't use those on a Russian Ammo tin... Don't ask.

 

Saw a guy open an ammo spam can once just by rubbing the sealed lip on his concrete driveway.

I carry a P-38 At all times Even used it to open bags and stuff when I left my knife lying somewhere else.

 

Open cans and open any intruder that enters the kitchen without permission.
