This is one area where we "Muricans" don't have enough laws. Between the crazies with hundreds of poisonous snakes in their house and dozens of bears, tigers, lions, etc. they constitute a public hazard in some areas. The only thing standing in their way in most cases is local zoning laws. It's one thing if someone lives in BFE and doesn't have a neighbor for 20 miles, but most of these rascals set up shop just outside of small towns. I know of one "zoo" where the guy has lions and tigers, has a criminal record, he and his kids are on drugs and he manages to keep the animals. People there have told me it's eerie to hear a lion roaring 1/4 a mile away from their house knowing its owner is an idiot on drugs.

Is this still going on or is it contained now?

Keep your kids in the house, keep your doors locked, travel by vehicle, be armed if legal and possible and stay informed. I am sure those animals are also scared (not that this makes them any less dangerous) and they are not looking for confrontations with humans.

I am sure they will have this wrapped up in no time.

I have read in a few places that there are as many or more tigers in private hands in the US than actually still in the wild worldwide. Estimates I have seen are anything from 5 to 15 thousand in captivity in the US, versus around 4 to 6 thousand in the wild.

Pablo Escobar's escaped Hippo's are breeding away quite happily in Columbia, and will be a threat to locals unless captured or shot. Haven't heard if they have caught them all- last I heard it was over 35......

Its sad that rare animals were killed for no other reason than some irresponsible dumbass released his "collection" and committed suicide.
Killing all these magnificent creatures was not hunting. They lived in captivity.. Shootin ducks on a pond is all this was. I understand It had to be done and I agree. Hell a lion was hit by a car because he didnt know not to wander into traffic. The entire ordeal was a tragedy not a hunt.
Im not anti hunting by any means. I have killed my fair share of game and put meat in the freezer.
Hunting is used to sustain your family. Every kill I make a prayer is said thanking the Lord for my harvest and forgive me for taking a life.
You wanna kill a grizzly or a lion. Go do it on their turf on their terms.
You will be scared ****less. Killing a grizzly is nothing but days of boredom followed by a few seconds of sheer terror. Im sure lions and tigers are the same.
These were slaughtered predators here. Show some respect!

Being retired from a Sheriffs Dept not far from here i can tell you that you are right it is a tragedy, Unfortunately the Deputies are not trained to deal with this type of animal and know that Sheriff Lutz was worried about the publics safety. The S.O will surely be under fire for shooting the animals but imagine if instead of shooting the animals the Deputies were trying to catch them and someone got killed? You know the Department would have been sued for not killing the animals. I loved my job but situations like this where you are damned if you do and damned if you don't i do not miss at all.

I have had to help deputies around here gather up horses and cattle, unless they grew up dealing with this they just don't what to do. Police forces cannot train everyone as to how to handle a horse or deal with a cow or..lol capture Lions, Tigers and bears.

I have seen deputies nearly killed trying to catch horses, simply because they do not understand what to do.

I think they did the only sensible thing, trying to capture any of the dangerous exotic animals would have been completely foolish, not to mention the longer they were out the more danger to the public there was.

The spookiest part of all this, is that the animals were not completely wild they had been around people on the preserve meaning they will have a lot less fear of humans making for much greater potential for harm to humans.

If the animal nuts have their way we will have to hire a zoologist onto every police department.... lol.... bullets are a lot cheaper...

I did some digging to try to understand why this guy let his animals loose and commited suicide.

One news article said that the police had been called to the property 30 times with complaints from neighbors. And that he had just been released from prison after serving a year term.

I discover at an NPR news article that he had been in trouble with ATF in 2009. So I looked up the ATF thing and discovered he was charged with weapons violations. "possession of illegal firearms, including machine guns and firearms without serial numbers"

ATF agents seized the illegal weapons while executing a search warrant of Thompson’s property near Zanesville in June, 2008.

"The five-count indictment alleges that Thompson unlawfully possessed five machine guns, failed to register those machine guns, and possessed three firearms without serial numbers. Each count is punishable by up to ten years imprisonment. The indictment also contains two counts seeking forfeiture of the firearms.
An indictment is merely an accusation. All defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty."

This guy is lined up for 50 years in prison but he get's out in 1 year?

Thompson plead guilty: LINK: http://www.justice.gov/usao/ohs/news/2010/04-05-10-Col.pdf

"In November 2009, U.S. District Judge Algenon L. Marbley suppressed the 133 guns and ammunition seized during the raid, stating the execution of the search warrant was unreasonable in many ways." LINK:http://www.democracyforums.com/showthread.php?t=45291

I think I'm getting the picture here. It's the Fast and Furious ATF finally got their man his life sentence.

Who knows? Maybe this guy even had insider info on the Fast and Furious thing that's being investigated? Maybe he didn't commit suicide at all.
