Most Americans are bad at learning/speaking any foreign language, a result of usually not beginning to learn one until high school, often from teachers who read one better than they speak it themselves. (I certainly am bad at it, and my engineer brother only made it out of college because they allowed a programming language to be counted for his language requirement).

As a result, we're always impressed and slightly amazed when any foreigner speaks/writes English like it is a first language. :)

Not Google Translate? Then color me impressed.

my bad, yeah I meant more within "living memory". Otherwise, all of Europe and the Americas are filled with bloody conflicts and atrocities.

Hi!
I've been contemplating whether to post more updates or not - the reason is, the war moved to the east right now things are in sort of a "restbite" mode, where we are seeing life beginning to return back to normal, "normal" being a very loose term, things definitely won't be "as before". Many people aren't fully sure if the war has left this region for good or if there will be a part 2 and this is just an intermediate period, though I think/hope now will be the long recovery phase. I, for example, will be visiting Kyiv next week for the first time since the war began, since I have braces and those are months past their servicing date. To think, before, me and the wife joked how braces would be impractical for a zombie apocalypse and even contemplated jokingly asking the dentist about this eventuality.
Spoke to some acquaintances over the phone who were in the previously occupied parts - one had to sit in basements for a month with his kids and wife, only having enough food for 1-2 weeks: they previously bought stuff at the store as they usually do, but when the invasion began they sorta laughed at the people panic-buying. Well, after a day all the food, except for the expensive caviar and other somesuch was gone, the next day only ice cream remained at the store - he mentioned how it's impossible to explain to a small child who wants food that "you can't eat more now, so that you won't starve later". Luckily, they are out now and in Poland - he was let out since he falls under the exception of "father to a multi child household". Another person I know said he lived under occupation for 2 weeks, and that the russian soldiers came in their house and asked everyone for their documents, and that now, having seen images of their house that they lived there and it's all rummaged through/looted.

Also, I've done this visual aid which I think might be useful, which compares the size of Ukraine to Texas. Both in terms of landmass and population, it's actually quite comparable.

The point being that, due to the size of the country, for many years now there already was a slow-burn conflict in the east, but here it was almost like a different world. Right now it's different, since there are still air raid sirens and stuff, but overall there is hope that at least for the Kyiv area and westward, things are going to be somewhat calmer from now on. Then again, every time I talk about politics and geopolitical projections for the future it ends up biting me in the ass, so maybe in 2 weeks people will be quoting this text ironically.

Thanks, yuriy. Please keep updating. The after is just as important as the during.

Hi hua man! Yup, still here.
Been doing more preps: got several tens of kilograms of roasted peanuts and other dried foods that contain calories and can be consumed without cooking.
Also, while I don't have solar, I realized that by using 5$ I could literally make something that could be a lifesaver:
I already have a car battery and a usb car charger thing which I used in my boat - I now ordered a thingy which is basically a cable that allows me to connect it all without, well, needing a car or boat View attachment 473812
- to anyone else who will want to try this, know that you must get the version of the cable that has the voltage safety fuse thing so as not to fry your phone.

Right now where I am there aren't electricity issues.. for now. But it's getting worse. I personally want to prepare as much as possible for the worst-case scenario of ever-increasing blackouts that potentially lead to weeks/months without electricity ( since, after all, it's not just some natural disaster but an opposing force that's intentionally trying to accomplish exactly that). I'm using this week to do some last-minute prepping which everything is still normal-ish.

Read an article where someone hooked a car alternator to a small paddle wheel in the local river. Could charge their batteries that way. They cannibalized abandoned cars to use in their homes.

If fuel were available I would at least buy a generator until you get the solar sorted out. You may be glad you have one on rainy and cloudy days. It doesn't have to be a whole house Genny. Just enough to provide a limited amount of power. Maybe some back up storage batteries.
At least use it to charge car batteries.
