The increased use of the death penalty would decrease the amount of violent crime here in the United States. However, compassion for our violent citizens who can't seem to control their urges to attack, rob, rape and terrify others should still be used. Proper use of prison boot camps and work details would reduce both the cost and length of prison terms of violent offenders. This would also offer a better chance at rehabilitation.
Our current systems of prisons are not effective in reducing crime. Recidivism for prior inmates is 68%. Youthful, first time offenders whose crimes are not too horrific, should be placed in prison boot camps---not our military. Discipline should be along the lines of what can be seen in the movie Full Metal Jacket. For those who backslide and become second time violent offenders, a few years spent working dawn till dusk in a chain gangs would encourage more positive behavior. Please know, what was not considered cruel and unusual punishment by our Founding Fathers in 1787 should never be construed as cruel or unusual today.
The death penalty should be reserved only for third-time or greater violent felons, and those whose acts are clearly outlandish and violent. Examples are capital murderers, child and preditory rapists, carjackers and home invasion artists. To promote "green technology," ropes made of hemp should be employed to carry out the sentancing, preferably the next morning. Of course nothing is going to change until the people vote to overturn the unconstitutional use of judicial review by federal judges.
Too many people believe that capital punishment is the same thing as murder. Are there not three kinds of homocide: criminal, justifiable and praiseworthy? Our current catch and release strategy of crime control has created hundreds of thousands of extra dead victims in the last generation. Executing a felon is not murder, it is called justice. I hope my very liberal and compassionate views have not offended any of the conservative readers of this forum. Thank you.
