Trouble at my Uncles Place...

Well, I'd never thought I'd be posting this but here goes.

Basically my uncle out in the country has bought a place.
Here's the deal, a few 'two-legged animals' have decided that it would be fun to throw heavy stones at his roof at 0100 hrs in the morning.
They are doing this while he and his aunt are in.

Basically the MO is them to pull up in a small cc car then throw 3-4 stones and drive off into the night.

The local police have been told but there's not much they can do. They sent a response out who had a chat for about half an hour then off they went. Basically confirming the long-held view that the cops are just a data recording / response outfit.

Anyway, I'm staying at his place and they do it again at about the same time! :(
This time they've broken a tile on the roof!
But the thing that really worrys me the most is there are two heavy skylights in the roof.
We are in there at night and all it takes is one stone to come through where we are...

The trouble is there's no easy to spot them coming, the road runs above and across to the house and land (we are in a hilly depression) so any car could be them going past.

The defence laws in this country are not great btw...

We have a plan to erect posts and green netting to stave off any future 'stone issues' along with CCTV...
Will keep this thread posting on further developments...

Is there any cover for you out there to wait for them? With a camera perhaps OR some rocks of your own? Seems they need to get OUT of the car to toss them so accurately or does it seem they can toss from the car while moving or almost stopped?

Like REM, why this house? If there are neighbors nearby perhaps you could ask who owned it previously, foreclosure, local bullies old house, etc..

I can tell you that this little cheap camera set, ROCKS. You can record what is seen at night by a separate cable purchase for your recorder. Stopped my neighbors madness when I had an attorney mail her a copy of her antics.

Sorry this is happening to your uncle as well.

Have your uncle buy some galvinized screen or chicken wire to put up over his skylights to protect them, then have him or you, mount acouple dusk to dawn lights with flood beam bulbs, on the side of the house that faces where the rocks are being thrown from, the lights alone may stop it from happening, if not, try to takes pics of them doing it or filming it, maybe even try a motion game camera to get pics of them, you can mount it to a tree or fence post , then go to the police with the proof

lol......full of doe ****....and pepper spray.

For real though the game cams are probaly the best idea, not saying some salt rock wouldnt do the trick, but you cant do it leagally. Let the law work for you.

good luck with nabbing your rock bandits..

Sit on the other side of the road with a 1,000,000 candle power spot light (and shot gun) and wait. Not to shoot them but to *rack* it when they stop to throw. Light them up and let them hear the rack. Should stop it. If not you'll at least get a good laugh and possibly make them **** themselves in the process. Running a screen or net between some trees may not be a bad idea to stop it long term though.

I would suggest covering those skylights. If it's not a private road, motion activated night vision cameras in a couple of trees along that road may capture the license plate of the culprits. Then you'd have something for LEO to work with.

If it's a private road and my property LEO would be there for a trespass call tonight while the rock tossers were trying to change tires.

Same time each time, easypeasy. Will cost you a couple of hours each night if it's not every night, but think of it as a learning prep in shtf surveillance and capture. Lots easier than when 4 of us sat in a freezing van all night for 5 nights to catch the motorcycle thieves 30 years ago. BTW, don't know where you live, but if you get them, remember it's a long walk naked from the middle of the desert at 2 a.m. And that's after they got the duct take off...

persona non grata

Are leg-hold traps legal in the state in question?

Noise-activated relays exist. Green lasers exist. Farmers use butane cannons to scare off crows. Infrared digital video cameras exist. And too, one can always release the dogs.

Is there a pattern to when they come to play? Does another family lay claim to that land? Who did your uncle p!ss off?

Rest assured the county mounties know who the trouble-makers are. They may know the specifics. Lawmen and outlaws are sometimes related.

If it is a rural county, local attorneys are aware of standing squabbles and aware of who are the local genetic throw-backs. Be careful going to an older attorney, he's chosen sides long ago. Go to the courthouse during a non-busy hour with some semi-logical reason to show up. Chat-up a local female clerk (or two) and learn who are the "wise-men" and/or "women in control" of this county. Do NOT give your real reason for asking. Find a means to talk to these important folk. The clerks may inform you of what makes these in-the-know folk happy. Having friends is the most important thing in life. And when seeking friends, know that you have to be a real friend also. Even among demons, honesty is always the best policy.

Mosst states in the US forbid traps (even in the states that allow lethal force) they want you "pulling the trigger" after makeing an informed decision ....traps can't think.

Where is all this happening? Is it in a place that youa re allowed to shoot people for Trespassing and property destruction or do you have no such choices?

If you cannot defend your property with a firearm can you let mean dogs out on them (assuming they are on your property)?

It is difficult to hepl if I cannot figure out what laws there and and waht limits there are to dealing with this situation.

If you live in Texas and they are trespassin, caising property destruction (in the nighttime) and you fear death and/or serious bodily injury from these large stones that may pass through your roof and onto somebody below...the answer is simple. Shoot them and call 911.

Stake out the road and wait for them to toss a rock. Get their license number and call the cops.
The op said it happens around the same time so stake out the road at that time.
Get the cops involved since it isn't on your property but a public road, give them the license plate number and let them take care of it.

The best is to build a case in advance so they get nailed with several Felonies. Record it, document it and call an investigator now and get him on your side with an in person appearance.

If they're stopping and throwing 3-4 rocks at a time are they gathering the rocks from the side of the road? If so, spray or wet the rocks with some "invisible" Fluorescent Leak Detection Dye or some UV die. Leave the smooth polished rocks so the prints stay on the rocks :) Make sure the easiest to throw are all marked. Those idiots will have UV die all over themselves their house, their car (including the door handles), they're steering wheels without even knowing it for e very long time!

You can identify them with something like this:

Setup a 1080 HD camera with a 64gb of SD memory and IR Vision. Total cost about $250. The Panasonic HDC-TM40 will film for 16 hours on 64GB in 1080 HD. You'll need a 12V battery to keep the camera running that long. You'll catch the entire episode on Film, The police will have their License plate and the dye will be all over them, their house and car. Hand the police all the applicable Penal codes and charges in advance. Vandalism, assault with a deadly weapon, littering, destruction of private property, attempted murder?, Racial Crimes? Stalking? illegally parking a vehicle on a public hight way? Attacking a Senior citizen? Whatever's applicable to your local laws that fit the actual crimes. Hit them with civil, criminal charges and a restraining order.

Alas, these goons are taking their own rocks with them as far as we can work out... We have quite a selection so far...
Also, these issues at my uncles place are taking place in the socialised EU :(

Traps against humans, yes.

Traps set for cars, not so much.

There was once a guy named Ragnar Benson. "Uncle Ragnar".

He was famous for setting traps. Here is his book:

Point is you can come up with some sort of trip wire that allows a heavy steel cable to be drawn up across the road, anchored to a rock or steel stake in the ground, that will stop a vehicle. Alternately, some sort of barrier that can suddenly be erected across the road as the intruder vehicle is inbound...you get the idea.

As Pro-Pain said in post #16 above, having their car stuck in your driveway would certainly provide evidence. So long as they're not hurt, let them deal with the police and explain why their car is there in the first place.

And then there is redneckville

I know of a Southern Appalachian county wherein many a'story could be found.

Oh, one just fell out of my head and onto the keyboard: The locals up in a hollar or two off of a well-known road used to call a deputy up in there for some bogus reason. When he would drive up in there, they'd drop a tree across the road behind him.

The colorful sheriff (from a country far far away; you would not believe me if I told you) became less than amused by such doings. So, he orders, receives from Uncle Sam (I think I know which dept., but not sure), and issues to his men M14s, 7.62 NATO, with selector switches.

Respect for the law returned to the unwashed.
