good info. its far easier to know what you cant eat as opposed to what you can simply because the list is shorter. also, most things that are slightly harmful have their harmfulness removed when boiled twice, changing the water in between. good info.
this stuff is very important. the plant life you consume is what will save you in the long run, not the hunting. i believe meat to be a supplement to vegetation, and its easy to train in the east at least. all i do is pack my ruck and walk about 10 miles down a highway with woods on both sides. i use a guide as a referrance if i cant remember a specific plant, as well as to try to find a cartain plant to determine where it would grow naturally in that environment.
this accomplishes a few goals. first and foremost, i learn the plantlife that will either save my life or make my weekend excursions more pleasant. second, i get some really good applicable exercise for a survival situation. no better way to train for walking a long distance with your equipment than walking a long distance with your equipment. also, if you make a mistake and eat the wrong plant (which at some point you will if you train long enough), you will be on a highway and can get help easily if you fall out. fortunately, here in north america there arent a great deal of lethal plants, and the ones we have generally arent in high concentrations species in one general habitat. usually the problems associated with these plants are some gastrointestinal disturbances, which in the comfort of your home would be a mere nuisance, but in the wild can kill.
i do agree with ammo, however, train with care. do not eat without the greatest confidence. if the use of resources like these arent enough to settle your mind, then dont do it. there are many classes-wether that be in a school environment or a survival course-that will take you and show you the plants hands on. so when in doubt, dont, but plant identification and preperation techniques will make the difference between you living and dieing. hunting is a necessary comfort, while vegetation is simply a necessity.
didnt mean to hijack your thread bad, just wanted to further emphasise your find as i believe this to be 1 of the 3 most important factors in survival. great post.
