Didn't go so well. No deer taken. No shots fired. About 8 hours spent.

I saw three groups of deer over the course of the day. All three were out of range. They all seemed to know I was there despite being downwind most of the time.

My next opportunity will be in November.

That is the way it goes sometimes. Hopefully you had a good time in the field.

Buddy wanted to go dove hunting this morning although I think all the birds have left already for points south. Sure enough, we saw 2 or 3 birds and got one. Ah well, at least we got out, although I am not sure it was worth getting up at 4:45AM for.

Hunting mornings in the early season is kind of overrated. I understand typically its cooler in the mornings, but most of the time you will do more harm than good.

Do the Charlie Chaplin walk is really a pain in the ass.

Could have been worse. Early doe season yesterday and I have a 10 point come strolling through broadside at 25yds about an hour before dark. I put the crosshairs on his heart and thought "your dead now you just don't know it" and then layed the rifle across my lap so I wouldn't get tempted.

I call him Zombie Buck now. Hope he makes it through the rut because I want him spreading those genes as much as possible.

My days of hunting with a shotgun slug are quickly coming to an end. Everybody around me is cheating by baiting (illegal in Michigan) and are using scoped rifles (legal). I'm gonna get a scoped center fire rifle before November 15th. With a scoped center fire rifle, I could have had 1 to 3 good shots.

Incidentally, today I barbecued some back straps from last year's deer. In a word: HEAVENLY!

If that's the case then the deer move bait pile to bait pile. You hunt the trails in between.

I am an opportunist when hunting outside big game seasons. If I am not trying to fill a specific tag, it isn't uncommon for me to be mooching around with a rifle and a shotgun at the same time. Squirrel, rabbit, duck, pigeon, coot, muskrat, beaver, goose, jackrabbits, whatever. Anything edible that is in season and walks, crawls or flies.
