My local range doesn't allow FMJ and there's no other feasible place for me too shoot. I like to shoot my rifles and sight them in with the ammo I intend to use. My problem is that I'd like to buy bulk ammo, but HP or soft point is substantially more expensive than FMJ. Do you guys think it would be a big issue if I was to stock up on FMJ but just shoot other ammo now for sighting in/hunting?

Right now I'm just shooting .223, but plan on getting a 7.62x39 soon.
Thanks.

If you are planning on using FMJ load for your SHTF stash...what I would do is sight in with the FMJ since that is your go to ammo supply. Once you have the optic/sights where you want them with your FMJ load...use the premium ammo and adjust accordingly...since you will probably see a different in POI.

Probably the backstop is not tough enough to stop FMJ for the more powerful rifles.

More to the point, why would you stash FMJ for SHTF ammo?
Hollow or soft point is far more effective on un-armored targets. Even if you could only buy half as many HP or SP rounds, it still might be the best choice, because with the FMJ's, you very well might need two or three shots for what a single HP would do.

I see nothing wrong with your thinking. Having ammo, and lots of it, makes sense to me. I'm in the same situation as you, buying less expensive FMJ, versus HP or SP. I have much more FMJ. On a slight different note, as to you switching from .223 to 7.62x39, I JUST made that change. I'm very glad I did. I'm totally happy with my sks. I know there are so many opinions out there about which is better, but for me, for a variety of reasons, the sks fills my needs much better than my AR-15 did. Good Luck!

Thanks.
I'm still weighing my options about switching or adding 7.62x39. I have a couple of AR's and a mini-14 now - and it looks like moey may start getting tight, so I might just be better off stocking up on ammo instead of buying another rifle or two...

If you move to 7.62x39 you can buy Silver Bear and Brown Bear in FMJ, HP or SP and all for the same price. Does your range use steel plates for targets? If not, I am thinking they must be a bit strange. Can you hear them saying " we only want lead in the soil around here.............." Yikes:confused:

Where in Texas are you bro? If you are in or near the DFW area, Texas Defensive Shooting Academy www.tdsa.net will let you shoot FMJ rounds all day long. It's a TOTALLY awesome range and I'd wager that you've never been to one like it. First time visit with a member is free and I'm a member.:thumb:

As for your choice in ammo for right now...well....I know the price difference, yes.

i would say don't don't go to the range. There's nothing wrong with fmj. personally, i try not to buy fmj, you cant hunt with it unlike sp and hp.

There's nothing wrong with stocking up on it. ammo will only get more expensive. who knows when you will have to shoot through quarter inch steel or just "goof off" (safely) in the woods doing bump firing and other hoodrat stuff with your friends!
