You just can't make this stuff up! This is bad for consumers and farmers! Get prepared to not eat meat and no dairy unless you raise it yourself! I got this from the farm bureau website. What's next a tax for breathing?

AFBF Opposes EPA-Proposed Tax on Livestock

WASHINGTON, D.C., Nov. 20, 2008 – The American Farm Bureau Federation has registered its opposition to an Environmental Protection Agency proposal to regulate greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act, asserting it would essentially result in new taxes on livestock operations.

“Most livestock and dairy farmers would not be able to pass along the costs incurred under this plan,” said Mark Maslyn, AFBF executive director of public policy. “Steep fees associated with this action would force many producers out of business. The net result would likely be higher consumer costs for milk, beef and pork,” said Maslyn, in comments submitted to EPA.

According to Agriculture Department figures, any farm or ranch with more than 25 dairy cows, 50 beef cattle or 200 hogs emits more than 100 tons of carbon equivalent per year, and thus would need to obtain a permit under the proposed rules. More than 90 percent of U.S. dairy, beef and pork production would be affected by the proposal, Maslyn noted.

Permit fees vary from state to state but EPA sets a “presumptive minimum rate” for fees. For 2008-2009, the rate is $43.75 per ton of emitted greenhouse gases. According to Maslyn, the proposed fee would mean annual assessments of $175 for each dairy cow, $87.50 for each head of beef cattle and $20 for each hog.

In addition, Maslyn said the proposed rules would be ineffective because of the global nature of greenhouse gases. “Reduction of a ton of greenhouse gases anywhere will make a difference, but if a ton is removed in Iowa and replaced by a ton in China, then no net effect occurred,” he said. “A livestock tax and regulation of greenhouse gases under the Clean Air Act will impose restrictions and added costs on the U.S. economy without reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.”

Some serious fools must have dreamed up this unjust and stupid nonsense.

But look at the bright side! [?????] This creates jobs for people and a new and helpful [again, ?????] bureaucracy!

We will now have "The Department of Farts and Measures" and hey, is it not inequitable and inaccurate to assume that all cows fart out equal volumes of intestinal gas?

You, in fairness, cannot just rely upon some mathematical computation which assumes that every cow farts equal volumes of intestinal gas, is this not so?

So, in order to implement this visionary and innovative policy [?????], one needs to install 'fart volume meters' on every cow's anus and one needs people to run around monthly to each and every cow to read accurately these meters!

It's brilliant! [?????]

I guess I'm going to sound like a rebel here...

Meat has never been as cheap as what it is now.

The price that our grandparents paid for meat was higher, the animals were older when killed, were fed very little artificial feed and they had more fat on them. These animals were also on a drug and steroid free diet.

I think meat should cost more money.

That money should be passed onto the farmer, not the supermarket.

I eat less meat now, perhaps 3 days a week instead of 7/7, but that meat is the best I can buy. The difference in taste, texture and digestion is remarkable. Although I will say I'm not religious with it, visiting other people I will eat what they cook. The other days in the week I'll eat fish, with one evening meal definitely been a veggie one (I like veggies as well as a good steak).

I whole heartedly believe in supporting organic meat, not the sad fat free, anemic, drugged up stuff that is normally sold as "meat".

I also believe in supporting our nation's farmers.

As to the fart tax on livestock?

I saw that scientists have figured out the gene/bacteria in kangaroos that doesn't make them fart. They want to give this to livestock to stop the methane problem.

Yet more tampering with nature I say....

Y.B. This is a tax, this is not putting more money into the farmers pockets. It's going to the criminal government. It's all about control. What the he** are they going to spend it on? They have already proven, they do not spend the tax money, where it's originally designated to go to. It's just another government scam to screw over the people and protect big corporations. They want small farms to die, so corporate farms can take over and control the food supply. The government just keeps taking and spending with no accountability and no consequences. I pay taxes on gas, property, income, phones, cable, and I could go on and on but... what's the point.
