Why spices and sugar? I must be lost.
You ever tried to eat bad food without them?

For most of history spices and sugar have been just as if not more valuable than gold, ask your grandma or paw, what a sugar chest is, and why it has a lock and key on it. With modern society, it's easy to produce and ship now, but if the SHTF, those might not be easy to get... and everyone will want it.

With any bad food, you can take salt, sugar, and/or spices, and make it somewhat good.

TOILET PAPER!

OK, toilet paper. Without going into detail, I once sick with a bad stomach and didn't have anything worthwhile, like TP or flushable wipes, that was a nightmare, and I wasn't even done with the Sports Section. I would have paid ten bucks for one roll...

TP is significant to me although I don't think about it much until I need it.

One of my reasons I certainly don't want to time travel is because they didn't have butt wipe for much of humanity's existence. The #2 reason is I don't want to be around people who don't use buttwipe or something like that. (The #3 reason is I might wind up before they have Diet Coke.) #4 is women didn't shave their legs, arms and armpits in the past. #5 is...well, you get the picture, butt wipe is related to #1 and #3 on my list, so it's important.

So toilet paper. I won't trade it away, but you may get a smoked King Salmon, a bucket of black berries, or some workable leather items off of me for a roll of toilet paper.

Not counting precious metals or jewelry (because no one really knows) here are the top 5 things for sure that you could use to barter when SHTF:

Water (though I don't know what anyone would give it up for)
Ammo/Magazines
Matches
Tobacco
Tarps

Stockpile these and you're all set! Yes? No? Others? Just five items that you would use for barter. This is NOT another BOB section :)
I am going to disagree with water. If it came down to where water was being used as a trade item, any sense of "trade" would breakdown and people will go right for the killing for water.

Someone NEEDING water will be in desperate shape and not a person to trade with. And a society that is in this situation is already too far gone.

And that's why this is America! We can disagree! Its cool. And I don't have to be a draconian socialist NAZI and make you bend to my way of thinking or threaten you.

(Addressing the crowd) See how that works libs?

I think he means toilet paper ;)

alcohol has many uses beyond being intoxicated. I would be more inclined to make it rather than store it.

Pool Shock (calcium hypochlorite)
.22lr (I have other calibers for barter but have a lot of .22)
wheat (other grains too)
dried beans
salt
(other things I have for barter)
knives and multi-tools, general hand tools
hack saw blades.
matches
oil lamps and oil
propane cylinders
candles

Good thread topic, haven't seen this one pop up in a while.

I have been sitting and pondering my preps and what certain things would mean to me. I have certain things in excess that I would probably never run out of and you may have something I would like to have. I am trying to think, not so much as what I want to store for barter but, what would I like to have occasionally, to fill a want not covered by myself. This is where I would put my barter bets on. At least until commerce opened back up.

Wow, if that wasn't in code..I don't know what would be. LMAO

Let me elaborate:

This of course is a personal thing, as all trades are.

I would trade a fair amount with those of you storing booze. In the next ten years, I will celebrate 30 years being married. That is worth something, sitting with my Wife during a peaceful moment, around a campfire, pondering love and life.... That alone is worth it's weight in gold.
But, I don't store much alcohol now as it is low priority when you have kids and family to take care of.

I have 2 young kids and they are armed and still play with legos. If the world fell apart tomorrow, come next year I would trade a jar of home canned beef for a pocket full of balloons, because, right now, toys are low on my list. And kids still need to be kids.

There are lots of wise choices listed above and Jerry's lists are impressive....
Just think about what you and yours would like to enjoy come shortages, this would give you a good starting point.

My .00000002 cents worth, adjusted for inflation.

When markets open back up..a year after... Well, y'all have that covered above. :thumb:

Matches get wet and wont wotk. Lighters can at least be dried out and still work. Trash bags/zip lock bags, tin foil, booze, water.

I guess someone didnt like my first post and deleted it. At least I thought it was funny.
