The Republic of Texas, Fortress America?

It’s hard to be an optimist these days, there is bad news everywhere. Europe is all but lost to the socialists and the Islamists. Much of the US is heading down the same path. The spine of America seems to be withering away, the only bright spot on the map is the state of Texas. It has bucked the odds in the last few years and made economic gains while the rest of the nation has continued a downhill spiral.

If things ever do reach a tipping point and totally collapse, I have to believe either the state of Texas or the Republic of Texas will still be there like a rock, they may be the last midget standing, but I must believe there will still be some semblance of what used to be America present there while the rest of the continent lapses into the dark ages.

So, with that being said, what will happen if that day comes? Will they accept refugees from other states? Will Red River ******** be welcome? Would they possibly consider adding other states to their republic? I ask these questions because I no longer look at Washington DC as the locomotive of this train, it's a decayed caboose.

I think it depends on the motives of the carpet baggers from north of the Red River :)

I do think that Texas as a Republic would add territory that was pre annexation 1845 Texas, the District of Criminals or Sodom on the Potomac as I refer to it doesn't have a clue as to how Americans live or think anymore.

We have weathered the recession because we have the resources to sustain our own economy despite those idiots in Washington's best efforts to destroy our way of life.

Once you kneel at the Alamo and swear loyalty to Sam Houston you are all good.

Carpet baggers will be shot on sight. Legitimate folks wanting to move is something else.

"Once you kneel at the Alamo and swear loyalty to Sam Houston you are all good"

Done that more than once.

Typical Texan thought. You know that it's just a texas myth that they are the only state that can legally succeed from the union. I tend to believe that Montana will be the shining beacon and retreat when things fall apart, they have already proven their willingness to stand up against Washington. Too much big money people in Texas to walk away from it all.

Yeah Right. Look at how thier Senators have voted. I used to think that Montana was the place to be (considering I was raised there). But I think the majority of Montana has sold out to the California money that has been moving in and taking the place over.

Eastern Texas gets enough rain to consider as a homestead location. Most of western Texas is too dry for my tastes. But I do like the gun laws and the frontier attitude.

I expect most states west of the Miss River to survive just fine without the federal governments stupid laws. Texas will survive, but so will most of the plains.

As a Native Texan, I will tell you that going it alone would be a formidable task. Mexico would love to take back as much as they could on the south. If the US breaks up as many people seem to be forcasting, the individual parts will have a very tough time standing alone. I agree that parts of Texas might give it a good fight but I see a lot of tough time ahead. The west coast of the US would be taken by outside elements for sure. China and Mexico would try to lay claim to parts. China would have the upper hand. Hawaii would go over to China quickly as a protectorate.

Banking would be a nightmare. There are only a few Texas owned banks anymore. Most are based out of state. Trade alliances would have to be established with other "Countries".

IF it truly is a SHTF scenario then all bets are off. I truly believe you would see more regional pacts like between Oklahoma, the Eastern Part of New Mexico and the Northern Part of Louisiana and possibly part of Arkansas. You still have to keep in mind the threat from outside. Mexico is going to see opportunity. I am not only speaking about the Mexican government but the northern based gangs trying to get a foothold in Texas.

As far as power grids go the old one in Texas was the best but politics have gotten to it. whatever would happen would be followed by a fight for sure.

As far as legally separation from the union that went away after the Civil War. At one time Texas had the right to divide itself into as many as five states. that was a real threat used to leverage power. I hope it never comes to it. If it does I am a Texan and will stand by my state. My people were here when we were a Republic.

Why not Alaska? Why not Florida? This whole premise is ridiculous.....so, let me get this right, the suggestion here is that in the event of total collapse of Washington DC, any one state could simply step in and take over, where DC failed? Or is the suggestion that in the event of total failure of America, Texas will go on as business as usual? Or as said, a beacon of bedrock of America( whatever that means)?

If DC fails , we all fail, if the event of a collpase, the Constitution will still have to prevail or else we become something else.....in other words, we will always have elected representatives to run things, we will always have to have a standing army and a backup militia, to trade with other Countries, fight with folks and have the same social issues as always......if Mexico or anyone else tries to take us over, we have to decide to either give up some land to get along or fight them......can we live without the Southwestern US, South of I-40? I'd say so.....

Not sure where you are getting your facts...ohh, you live in Austin, I understand now! But by the chance you MIGHT want the facts here they are: "government jobs in Texas has grown by 18.3 percent vs. a 10 percent increase in private-sector jobs.”

But as we all know, if you have a dollar and someone gives you a dollar, you have increased your worth by 100%...SO to that end, here are the REAL numbers: Texas has added 297,000 private-sector jobs and government only 31,000 jobs since 2009 IIRC exactly.

I don't live in Texas, and I don't expect to be seeking refuge there if you break away.
Thank you, wasn't expecting you anyhow...

The ROT would fail quicker than America did.......they couldn't defend themselves against the whole world, they couldn't trade enough, they'd have to fight Mexico alone for access to the Gulf, then they'd be land locked, they couldn't self sustain forever....so would they isolate or invite outsiders?
You are living in the outer worlds and have no idea of what you speak. The Governor has at his disposal a 2 FULL Divisions an Air Force, more than any other state in the US.

Yeah, Texas is fine, anywhere North of Fredricksburg.......Southern Texas is a vast desert wasteland.......no offense, it is what it is.......
Well, no its not, you don't know what your are talking about, we do have our deserts but S Texas is not one of them, very fertile land down there, its called the Rio Grande Valley.

The issue isn't secession, it's about a state being the only living part remaing of a carcass that once was. There are many attributes Texas possesses that other states and regions do not. The power grid is important, whether or not it could remain secure is questionable. Seaports, oil, natural gas, food, size and most important of all, a citizenry who will not stand by and allow their civilization to go the way of France, the Netherlands, et al.

Does it really matter what the snobs in a Washington DC art gallery think if the gallery no longer exists and they're sipping water from a ditch and dying from dysentery?

I suppose at some point we should be honest about things. The major failing of Texas in a complete TEOTWAWKI scenario has to do with demographics. If you are Hispanic, and friendly to the idea of rejoining Mexico, it is probably a good place to be. If you are Anglo and not so keen on joining up with our southern neighbor then it is not such a great place to be.

Bravado will do little good against the numbers that Texas is facing.

Shucks, in twenty years, Texas will probably seek to leave the union to rejoin Mexico anyhow - without a shot or TEOTWAWKI, just based on demographics.

Demographics - the ugly little thing we don't want to think about but know, deep down, that we should.

And 'no', Texas is certainly not the only one with that problem. Myself, I'd rather be living in New York than Texas if there was a complete TEOTWAWKI.

YMMV,
Chad

This would be a humorous forum to boast state pride for all, however, if this is in all seriousness it is wasted space. If this great country fails we ar all n deep trouble. I do ot doubt very difficult times maybe ahead but as history shows a people divided can not stand. What would be the best state to live in during extreme adversity, that is a great question worthy of opinions. I am from Missouri, consider myself a southern redneck but would take Montana as y preferred place to be if living off the land is required. Many southern states have the advantage of great hunting and fishing as well and offer a more hospitable winter climate but more cultural diversity than th NW states like Montana and idaho. That is not a racist comment but what I feel s reality in that if times would be that extreme " birds of a feather flock together-" meaning I would prefer to be around people who share my personal values more and reduce potential conflict that may come with adversity. Just two cents worth. Definatley not hammering texas, been there often, great state!

Having spent a week driving through Texas one night, all I can say it is a whole lot of nothing. Plus their idea of a Rest stop as being a picnic table plus a 55 gallon drum as a garbage can and nothing else (no bathrooms) leaves a lot to be desired.

May be a great place though if we get a rapid new Ice Age.

There are really three things that a new country would need, and Texas has all three.

1.) Natural border with another country
2.) Bordered with an international body of water
3.) Strong economy (relative to the other states, we have this as well)

I say let's get it on! I don't mind the red river ********, but I ask ONE thing. This isn't California, Nevada or any other state, this is Texas. Don't move here and try to change the laws. There is a reason you are moving out of California, the regulations cost too much. Just move here, get a job and enjoy life. We don't need you moving here and pushing your moral views down other folks' throat.

That is one thing that worries me. I know a lot of RR ******** are here, and I worry that we are slowly going to lose our grip on our way of life because the RR ******** will vote in some liberal and try to shake up our laws, maybe put an income tax on the Texans.
