For some, it's knives.
For others, firestarting.
And others, guns. My fetish?
I think it's going to be Military Packs.

I am just diggin' how much they can do and how much they can be customized.
If you got one, I'd love to see pictures of your set-up (especially modified packs).
Feel free to post mods, tips, pics or information of any USGI Packs or Foreign Packs.

ALICE
MOLLE
CFP-90
ILBE
...bring it on.

Anyone have any experience with the CPF-90 from Fox Outdoor?

It's the one most commonly sold as New Mil Spec in surplus stores. I am asking, because they are a China made pack. However, other China made packs I have from Fox are really tough well built packs.

I got a USGI CFP-90 pack with the day pack. Ironically, the day-pack seems to hold most of the weight and the ruck holds the heavy stuff (tent, camping bag, food, etc). I got mine unused for half the price of the Fox CFP-90. My problem with it is that it can hold too much, so I am always fighting the urge to fill it to the brim.

To be honest, its one of the most comfortable packs under heavy loads that I've used. From what I've heard, the bag has some durability problems with that plastic slider of theirs. I can see it but under your average hiking/camping conditions, it would hold up just fine. I just wouldn't want to jog and run with it all the time.

I picked up a a gen 2 ILBE pack for 100 bucks minus the assault pack. I ended up trading my slightly used CFP-90 for something else. The military command that I worked for before I got laid off went to the local DRMO and bought complete ILBE systems for the whole command including contractors. It happened a coupe of weeks after I was laid off:mad:

Just got my MCCEB Bag from Tony today.

It's in excellent shape. For $29., it's unbeatable. It's got tons of space. I could easily hook it up to a
frame (possibly an ALICE frame) & MOLLE II waist belt. Again, this is going to be my back-up bag
(a 2nd to my main field pack) stocked with bug out items.

I'll be picking up an ILBE later on this year right after I get a CFP-90.
Right now, I'm up to 1 ALICE/Hellcat Pack, 1 MCCEB Pack, 1 MOLLE Main Pack,
1 MOLLE Waist Pack and a few accessories (butt pack, rain cover, #2 liner bag).

I've carried some weight over the years.. both in pre-military hiking and during my time as a parachute infantryman. For my money you cannot beat the large ALICE for durability, versatility and ease of packing under both wet and dry conditions. Comfort for long range movement is not as good as some other packs but you can adjust comfort in some areas of carry as well.

I concur on the ALICE pack - for tactical movement it does the job admirably. For backpacking, I really like my CFP-90 - I got mine in a trade with an Army Reserve supply sergeant about 15 years ago ( he needed his Combat Lifesaver kits restocked, and I was the Medical Platoon sergeant). Very comfortable and roomy. The ALICE shines when you're moving fast, light, and heavily armed though.

How many other packs can that be said about? I've heard that over and over;
Stories of packs lasting well over a decade or two. That's one of the main
reasons I got an ALICE pack. I'm not against getting a modern pack with
all the bells & whistles and decades of technological advancements.
But, I KNOW that I have packs now that will last me for decades
under extreme conditions. That gives me great peace of mind.

CFP 90 is a POS compared to the Gregory SPEAR with the extras. Alone its a little small. But with external 3day pack, fanny pack, etc its bada$$. Kinda exensive but Gregory makes a great expidition backpack. Well worth it!

But I'm still a fan of my lg ALICE ruck...

Military packs are made to be worn with deuce gear. Civilian packs are not... SHTF I'm gonna be wearing deuce gear.
