This works great for the cheap rectangular sleeping bags, at least. Maybe not as good for the fancy odd-shaped ones.
It can help to safety pin or tie the corners to those of the cover, just as with any other duvet insert.
Duvet covers are pretty cheap at thrift stores and the covers can handle a good hot wash and dry cycle to get the thrifty smell out.
I've used flattened-out sleeping bags as ugly extra blankets for a long time, but it somehow never crossed my mind before to put them in nicer covers. So it seems worth mentioning here in case any of my fellow borderline-hoarder types were looking for a better storage solution or a nicer guest room for cheap
