...is to lay them out flat inside a duvet cover and keep it on a bed!

This works great for the cheap rectangular sleeping bags, at least. Maybe not as good for the fancy odd-shaped ones.

It can help to safety pin or tie the corners to those of the cover, just as with any other duvet insert.

Duvet covers are pretty cheap at thrift stores and the covers can handle a good hot wash and dry cycle to get the thrifty smell out.

I've used flattened-out sleeping bags as ugly extra blankets for a long time, but it somehow never crossed my mind before to put them in nicer covers. So it seems worth mentioning here in case any of my fellow borderline-hoarder types were looking for a better storage solution or a nicer guest room for cheap ;)

My Dad had a sub zero sleeping bag he got back in the 60's. Growing up I used to use it on my bed as a "blanket". Loved the smell as well.

I haven't seen that sleeping bag now for nearly 40yrs. Dad passed in Jan 2013.

Lo and behold, moving my Mom a month ago into a more affordable independent living, I came across that sleeping bag! Of course Mom said take it home. So it is now in my preps. Amazing thing to me its next to my much newer zero degree mummy bags, and it is nearly 4 times as big!

Queen would absolutely kick me to the curb if I put it across the bed now...🤔🤔

I got 4 dotted about the place, a -15*c in the lounge, a -20 down to -50*c in the Van and a 5 season one in the bedroom and also an Extreme 5 Season Twin Bag System in the bedroom that i use when I head up to Scotland in Winter, I used it when it was -8.4*c in the Van and with the Windchill it was -24*c /-11.34*f outside and I was roasting,

It's a great bag being two bags in one, it's the only one i have found that easily matches the 5 ( five ) Season rating which is -40*f/c and below. 😍

I have to get up to speed...people are looking for extra sleeping bags for what reason? I pick them up whenever they are cheap and availabe mostly at yard sales.
I have a bunch. We keep a couple in the vehicals durning winter here in montana that we can give away.
My other thing to hoard is the cheap "quilts" or duvets.

I dont call it hording when its good stuff.

Not bad idea. My BOB has a Primaloft half bag, comes up to the waist. I keep that in the bag, decompressed. Compressed, it's about 4 inches diameter x 4 inches long. I have a spare duvet at the end of my bed, with fire escape ladder and 3 x 10 litres water. My bed is almost the width of the room to the chimney breast, and that fills the gap. My tv/monitor is suspended above.
I do have a normal sleeping bag, kept loose in a wardrobe.
