Thanksgiving foods - Love & Hate

The Thanksgiving menu thread for me thinking about which traditional turkey-day foods I love the most, and which foods I absolutely hate. Plus recently found out that my brother-in-law hates turkey. Guess he will be eating vegetarian next Thursday.

Love: Stuffing/Dressing. Maybe I just don't have it very often, but I will eat it until I can't move then just two bites more.

Hate: Sweet potatoes/Yams with marshmallows on top. Clearly conceived of by Al Qaeda to terrorize Americans.

What kind of sick ****s have you been eating with?

I love stuffing especially if it has the giblets in it, I can handle dressing if I have good gravy for it.

I won't eat that sweet potato marshmellow **** that was probably invented by a toothless cat lady.

I don't like my wife's deviled eggs at all. No relish, bacon (I use beef) or half olive on top, hers remind me of my mom's but without the crunchy surprises where she missed a piece of shell.

I prefer my green bean casserole with ham or turkey ham and some diced onion in it, but only get it that way on the rare occasions that I make it during the year. Wife won't let me make it that way for a holiday.

Most of the rest of it is just food I can take it or leave it and prefer it covered in gravy.

There isn't much I don't like as far as what the food is. What I despise is the gluttony. Seriously, I do not need 37 different things to eat in one meal, ever. I just don't. I'm getting old and one plate of food is gonna be it unless I go full on piggy and eat two and suffer. Three would mean pain. I'd be content with just a simple meal, a meat, one or two veg, and maybe a simple dessert. It all seems to get so cluttered.

(And as I say that, my wife is debating the 38th food item wondering if we "need" it. UUGGHH!!! To be fair, we are having people over, something like 15 if everybody shows up, which is pure insanity to me. But hey, most are family, and she wanted them to come. Happy wife, happy life. The neighbors did say I could come see 'em if I need to get away. LOL! The funny part, nobody is making or bringing turkey. Whatever... only a ham, a couple of roast chickens, chicken potpie, and a beef roast.)

Sweet potatoes are my favorite part of thanksgiving but we don't do them with that marshmallow crap on top.
We do a Pecan Praline Sweet Potato Casserole, I don't care what else gets to the table or doesnt as long as this is on the table

You should try it...

My wife (who hails from Mobile, AL) makes a dish she calls Sweet Potato Soufflé... It is VERY similar to the recipe you posted... Yummm!

Never had a big spread so a lot of the traditional stuff I've never had like green bean casserole, fancy stuffing, etc.

Love: Pumpkin pie, especially pumpkin pie squares with strusel topping. Mom's recipe is the best with gingersnap graham cracker style crust.

Hate: Sweet potato anything. Just no. Eww. Not only am I allergic, it tastes horrid.

Honorary mention hate: tasteless gravy. Just don't. It takes two seconds to doctor up with a little chicken bullion.

I love pretty much everything except brussels sprouts and mincemeat pie. Marshmallows on sweet potatoes is overkill to me but not a deal breaker. We never had green bean casserole or mac & cheese as part of Thanksgiving when I was growing up but I like them. I tend to get into food ruts where I eat much the same thing over and over so the variety of a holiday meal to break up the rut is welcome.

This is my first time going to Thanksgiving at someone else's house since before the COVID hysteria. Feels like I haven't been to a dinner party in forever. No brussels sprouts or mincemeat pie on the menu so I'm good.

I like both kinds of food, hot and cold. 😂 The meal itself is just Ok. Its the leftovers I really like. Sandwiches, potato pancakes, turkey soup, turkey SOS, turkey enchilada casserole. 😋

A few weirdos here regarding brussel sprouts... 🤨

Love me some BS! Nutritious and delicious!

Same with GBC. If you do it right and don't use canned beans and canned mushroom soup, it is a wonderful dish.

But I digress, most people take the easy route and end up not liking things that they would have really enjoyed, done right.

Carry on...

Can't stand giblets in ANYTHING! They make otherwise good food taste nasty. Giblets are for the dogs/cat.

LOVE smoked turkey; mashed taters; sourdough stuffing; gravy made with the "drippings" and turkey stock from last year's bird that was cooked down after the fact and then canned; cranberry sauce, olives, raw veggies (carrots and celery); sourdough rolls with butter; and of course, pumpkin pie.

I love most everything at Thanksgiving... Dressing, Mashed potatoes, Green bean casserole, Sweet Potato Soufflé, pumpkin and pecan pies...
Absolutely LOVE the Deep fried turkey... everyone in the family asks me to fry one!
I've cooked turkey a bunch of different ways (traditional oven, rotisserie on my charcoal grill or gas grill, smoked), and everyone always raves about it, but now they ONLY want the deep fried...

For people who don't like candied sweet potatoes or yams, try just baking them like a russet potato and putting butter, salt and pepper on them. Or Cajun spice.

I've joined the somewhat minimalist 3 or 4 items plus pie is enough crowd, but since everyone else goes all out, I get to sample other things the next day. The cool thing about being blessed with a full table is if you don't like something, you can leave it for the person who's bouncing like Tigger shouting "roast onion bake and, oh, oh, marshamallow fluff sweet potatoes, pass those down here please!" And when they lean over and whisper "She's a dear, but can you help me get rid of Edna's green bean casserole?" I can yelp "Look! Is that a Stellar's Jay at the feeder?!" and fork it on over. :)

Blessed and warm Thanksgiving everyone, whether you celebrate or just get to relax a bit.

Lol!!! Edna! Her and that green bean casserole!
Not a fan but I’ll sample anything someone brings to the table. Except maybe tofurkey. If it hasn’t been killed properly, it probably shouldn’t be there. Apologies to all who like TF!

We don’t like turkey, dressing, stuffing, cranberries, pumpkin pie, green bean casserole, fruit salad or anything else remotely resembling “traditional” Thanksgiving meals. We NEVER go anywhere for Thanksgiving. We invite everyone here. We aren’t going to risk going to someone’s house and facing a “traditional” Thanksgiving meal.

This year we are having spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, garlic bread, fresh salad, coconut pie, chocolate cake and an assortment of various appetizers.

Christmas is probably going to be fajitas.

Last year, I smoked two briskets, sausage and ribs. We invited the neighborhood to our house. There were no leftovers.

Another rebel like me.

My sister in law hates thanksgiving because she says all the food winds up the same color.

Love turkey, baked or smoked or deep fried. I prefer white meat. The dark meat is best made into hash with the leftover gravy over the next day or two.
Love turkey gravy, I make my own, use the giblets and neck to make a stock, salt, pepper, sage and thyme, use the drippings from the bird to make a roux, shred some neck meat to throw back in, and give the giblets to the cat.
Make my own cranberry dressing too. The wife eats it with turkey, I use it as jam….love the fresh rolls and croissants.

Hate the green bean stuff.
Wife cooks Brussel sprouts by cutting in half, and basically frying in bacon grease and/or butter. Still hate them.🤢. But the kids always ate them that way, so it’s a win.
Hate dressing. I like the smell, but can’t stand the taste.

The old jello/whip cream/cottage cheese fruit salad is yummy.
And I enjoy the sweet potato with marshmallow on top. I bake the sweet potatoes, then mash them with butter, brown sugar, cinnamon and a pinch of nutmeg, then brown the marshmallows under a broiler. Baking them changes everything. Don’t give me those nasty canned yams, I won’t eat them.

When we host a large group, I’ll do a ham as well as a turkey. Ham is my favorite food on the planet, and it gives the turkey haters an option.

I will be working on Thanksgiving so I won't get the gigantic meal. I'm one of those people that keep the world running while y'all are sleeping or eating yourself into a coma. That being said, I did not read one food item in these posts that I do not love. Special shout out to whomever mentioned oysters in the dressing, the BEST. DRESSING. EVER!!!

Oh!! I forgot my wife's butternut squash pie!! It's similar to pumpkin pie but 10x better... I could eat that and nothing else. She has and still collects the best of the best recipes from old timers and relatives for years. Man, y'all are killing me with all this food talk!!
