I consider any round a tactical round... I like 75gr bthp for my ar. Have over a thousand of those... I have 1000+ m855 for punching holes in stubborn stuff. I try to buy decent stuff because I'm not going to spend money on something just for plinking. I know I need to practice more but I never know when I'm going to get a chance so if I'm buying ammo I intend to buy a know which every round counts for.

To me, it's SD ammo or it's not...
SD ammo= whatever variant of HP sitting in the CCW that I carry; or sitting in the SD pistol for that intruder that ventures into the wrong house...

Everything else- is shtf stock. I won't care one iota if I shoot someone with FMJ vs HP. The target of a FMJ shot during shtf is not going to say anything about me shooting him/her with it, now will they ? Why FMJ for the majority ? Cause, I'd rather have 3000 rounds of some FMJ than 1000 rounds of some HP. Nope, during SHTF, everything in the arsenal is game. Running out of ammo because you bought more expensive HP, well, that's your choice, but certainly not mine.

I have ~ 100 HP and ~1000 FMJ for my 9mm plus a few hundred plated round nose that I've loaded myself. I've started looking into buying HP bullets because I can then load my own HP for the price of FMJ and just vary then load if I want.

The only tactical type stuff I have is a can of SS109 that I got on a trade and my hundred or so rounds of HP's for my carry guns.

I figure if the SHTF a bad guy isn't going to care if he gets shot with a tactical round or a target round so I spend my money accordingly.

I have been thinking about adding tracer rounds in 5.56 lately. What I have seen is 64grn for a decent price. What some opinions on about tracer rounds. Are tracer rounds made a variety of weights or only a few? I have found them to be very useful in the Army. I can see the benefit or having a tracer every 4 rounds of so in a magazine.

I think the ONLY difference in these products is some ammo vendor preaching to us that we need to spend MORE MONEY so we can wave a label on our shoulders that we have TACTICAL, " HE MAN " rounds rather than them ole CHEAP target lady ones.

Sure put more money in these ammo vendors pockets and your ammo will always go bang. Do it right the first time. Spend more money on my ammo I want to sell you. It will make you into a TACTICAL HE MAN!

:)q

You do certainly run into sales pitches, but some research will get you a good buy of quality ammo.

I would love to have some tracer rounds in 5.56, but I think they are illegal here. Not only do they show where your shots are going, but I believe they could be considered an incendiary device if shot into a wood framed building or other flammable material.
