Having ran my first 10k yesterday (part of my prepping agenda), I started thinking about what kind of footwear would be best in a survival/INCH situation. Personally, I am leaning ttoward a minimalist mindset. I ran the race in my vibram fivefingers, which I'm very comfortable with, but I have concerns about protection, as the sole is very very thin. What would be your all-purpose footwear of choice, if you know you had to leave and stay off the grid, away from the chaos of society?

Well, whatever you get if it's Vibrim, it'll last yah a while. I'd get something that holds a good arch and has at least polyurethane sole. Ecco makes a solid shoe that last a very long time and holds it’s comfort. They have a pretty large selection of footwear from hiking books to cross trainers which might fit your needs. They are spendy, however.

Good question. Especially for people who will be both hiking and working in the same shoe/boots.

I purchased a pair of Carolina Work Boots for women as the paperwork/research indicated Carolina boots are made for both hiking and lumber work. I can't run, so that eliminated a lot of options. Also, men may want to consider steel-toed boots for use around the ranch/farm/homestead. My dad got a broken big toe on his right foot from a pallet being dropped on his right boot. The downside to steel toes is they're not good for working outside in the coldest months of the year.

Just a few thoughts. Good luck.

I have been wearing Vibrams for about 3 months and love them. I have the Treksport and the Jaya LR. I definitely would use the Treksport over the Jaya for outdoor use. They have a much thicker sole. But I prefer my Merrell Siren Sport for hiking. They are light and have the Vibram sole.
