I voted "none of the above". Reason being...These are already-designed knifes. If an existing knife is what we want, then why not buy a bunch of them and put our logo on the blade? I think the point of a competition is to see what our talented members can design using their existing outdoors experience and imagination. I vote to come up with guidelines (ex. blade must be 3.5" to 6" long and 3/16" to 1/4" thick) then set the members free and see what they come up with...THEN we can all vote on which one we think should win! I was really looking forward to seeing the creativity that could come from this competition!

I like this design for a survival knife.

Something with a saw back so i dont have to risk batoning with my survival knife.
Saw back, full tang, solid handle, good grippy scales, THICK steel.

Most of those small knives would work, but i would consider them more camping, fishing, or bushcraft knives, rather than a survival knife...
Maybe a thick durable sheath with a few extra pockets for holding survival items and a sharpening stone...

I voted none of the above woodskife puukkos are my prefered style of knife

If I have to copy a style, I would love to try this one ^^^^^^^^

I really appreciate everyone's enthusiasm regarding the knife contest. I believe though that there are some folks who are disappointed that their favorite knife blade style is not represented in the poll. You would not try to enter your pet Greyhound in a horse race. You could argue that it has 4 legs and a tail and can run very fast. But it just doesn't happen(at least I've never seen dogs and horses run in the same race). By the same token there are different styles of knives that lend themselves to a particular use. Skinning knives have a particular shape/style. Bushcraft knives have a particular shape/style. neck knives have particular qualities that set them apart(they are usually small). Fighting knives have their own set of qualities that make them unique. Tactical knives the same deal. Some of these qualities can be combined into one knife. You could make a little tanto point knife and wear it as a necker. You can combine tactical and fighter to come up with a hybrid for a fighting knife. You can combine skinners with bushcraft and come up with what Kev is looking for. There are some designs that just don't lend themselves to crossover. I have never seen a skinner with a tanto point! That being said, my favorite blade style is "bowie". You may not have noticed, there is not one "bowie style" blade in the poll. So if you are looking for a tanto/fighting/tactical style blade in the upcoming poll it will not be there. That is for another contest. And yes, I will do anything I can to get a contest for a Fighter/tactical going after this particular contest is over. As far as "who's name is on the blades in the poll", yeah I really wish I had the computer smarts to just put the sillouhuette of the blade up there but I don't. I'm not pushing Boker,Dozier,ESEE, or anyone else. Concentrate on the shape of the blade(all are different)despite the makers name that is on it. Whichever style we choose, our makers will make it their own. As SeekHer so aptly put it. there are no original blade styles, just rehashes of existing styles. This is so true. We want our guys to come up with a dynamite rehash. So if you don't see a Bushcraft/skinner style blade that you like, post one that you do like and we will add it to the next poll. If you post a fighter/tactical....fugitabotit.

They also have a shorter bladed version of that same knife

Image removed because TOPS knives whined about me hotlinking....

Only thing i would change on it, is put an extra lashing hole on the bottom of the blade, for attaching it to a spear pole. I still like the larger version better though.

I wish i knew how to actually make a knife. Maybe i'll try to make one out of wood as an example...

Boot, since you asked and since I voted none of the above, here is what I would like to see as a design to be contemplated: the Recluse from Fiddleback Forge (this is a production version made by Bark River and sold through Knives Ship Free).

And yes, I am saving my money to get one eventually.

And that my friend is a beautiful example of a skinner/bush craft style blade. It will be on the next poll. Thanks for your input. This blade should satisfy those that like a pukko style blade as well.

Thanks for the explanation boot...If we are looking purely at blade SHAPE, I personally would like to see something similar to a BK2, ESEE 3,4, or 5, or even BK7...within the required size for the contest. Would it be reasonable to get one of those up on the next poll?

They're serrations not saw teeth.

More suited to ripping a mans ribs out than sawing wood.

Given that you want THICK steel why be shy about batoning? I fail to see how those teeth will be able to split wood effectively.

The pockets on my jacket and trousers can accommodate more gear than any knife pouch.

Done right "survival" is nothing more than unexpected camping, and the vast majority of the world who truly live a "wild" lifestyle don't pack TOPS, BUSSE, ESEE or any other "high speed" American knife.

Yes and yes my friend. The BKII, the ESEE-4 , another of the Dozier designs and the one above will be there for sure. Of course the winner of this poll will be there and one other as we will be taking out the "none of the above" option. So for everyone reading and 35 of you guys who voted "none of the above" I have received 2 requests for bonafide skinner/bush craft style blades. There are only a few real basic styles of blades that cover the entire genre. This next poll should cover them.boot

The price varies slightly with handle material and for me this is about the most I would want to pay for a working knife and one I would consider passing down to my children. It's about on par with other Bark River knives at around $250 plus or minus. You can see the different varieties offered here.

I've been thinking a lot about this contest and the poll and so on and trying very hard to not look at the knives themselves as they were presented, but more at the blades and what they represent in terms of a working profile.

I appreciate the work being put into this idea and it's more than what I would do for a similar project; trying to coordinate ideas around something so personal and so individual as a knife.

My knife tastes and preferences have drifted over the decades and I will be getting a recluse sooner or later. Of the choices in the poll, removing the "none of the above" option I would have chosen either 1 or 4 as the general blade profile is almost the same with just a difference between the grinds. I hope my input has been of some help.
