I use Sta-Bil in #1 heating oil, which has the same property's as Kerosene.

The kerosene I have stored is slowly rotated. VERY slowly rotated. The barrel I am using now was filled 20+ years ago. It works in my Aladdin lamps, regular kerosene lamps and heaters just fine. It has never been treated with anything. If you are using kerosene in something other that just lamps and wick type heaters , this advice may not apply.

 

Kerosene and diesel don't break down to the extent of gasoline. It is good for many years.

Was going to buy a new 5 gal. can of kerosene and I started thinking I should still have a Y2K stash in the barn.
Found 2 -5 gal. cans. Did a gravity check on them and their both right on the money after being unopened after 9 years.
I'm glad ,kerosene is up to $60. for 5 gals. here.........Alaskan.........Dennis

 

Update from STA-BIL

Just got a reply email from STA-BIL.

Says "STA-BIL is not for kerosene".

I take this to mean, it was not designed for it ("not for"), rather than it won't work with it.

Anyway, thank you for the useful posts here. The RL experiences are invaluable!

 

Also, I'm concerned about the fumes you might get from such an additive. Your kero is just fine without it.

Did you miss the part about Pri D being labelled for kerosene?

 

I run my tractor on diesel fuel. In the winter to keep the fuel from gelling, they add kerosene into the diesel fuel. First at 10% then when it gets cold 20%.

Kerosene is used to stabilize diesel fuel.

There is no need to add anything to kerosene it is a stabilizing agent.

In a nutshell what I have read on diesel and kerosene, is that bacteria is the main concern with long term storage. Seems the little blighters will slime up a good thing over time. If you must,... use a good antibiotic treatment...

Seems the new gasoline ethanol crap grows green slime crap too. I posted prior problems with my genset and green growing crap.
