Why do you think that they are so cheap? There were over 20 Million I said 20Million made. Most are just guns. There are some that should never be touched. For the most part, go for it. You are not hurting nothing.

untill obama stops there import of them

just wait you will see my moisans have increased in value 100 lately i can sell each for 200+ stock you chop it you can never sell them for that

if you want to modify it my advice is just get the scout mount it clips into the rear sight base and then you can have at it

me ill drop the 200 for the historical side mount but then ive already put a grand in restoring a k98

I have 4 Mosin Nagants. 1. 91 30 round receiver 2. 91 30 Hex receiver 3. Chinese type 53 4. model 44. Also I have 2 880 round spam cans and the archangel stock waiting on me when I get home on leave next month :D:
You have taken delivery on an Archangel Mosin stock????????
Where did you get it from. I thought that they were still pre-order only.:confused:

Since I only payed 90 out the door for it (perfect barrel, firing pin looks never used) I figured I'd turn it into my scout/brush gun. I took it to the range today and was expecting ALOT of kick.. it has recoil, not that much, but the hard and short butt made it hard on the shoulder. Loud :thumb:

Plans:

Polish trigger parts to make pull smoother
Paint stock to blend in better (od, dark grey, or black)
Chop a decent amount of wood from the beginning of barrel (as seen in this picture, though I will not be cutting as much)

Few questions: after stock is sanded, cut, and stripped: will spraypaint hold up? Should i bother with a satin clear coat for durability?
Is chopping off an amount of wood safe?
if you want to get the cosmoline out of the stock to refinish it first you'll need to get an iron, bunch of old rags, scotchbrite sponge with the green side, scrub brush, and a tub of hot and I mean hot water and dawn dish soap.

#1 Clean stock with soapy water and scrub brush just to get the surface oils off.

#2 soak old rags in water and place on stock. Use iron on steam setting and iron the rags. This will remove the finnish and get minor dings and dents out. Continue till the finish is off.

#3 get stock wet and use dawn dish soap and scotchbrite green side to scrub and clean the stock. then rinse, let dry you may have to repeat this step.

#4 your stock should now be clean, now you can lightly sand the stock with 400 grit sand paper.

Now you're ready for stain or paint.

Added a few pics. Enjoy

I used ebony stain and steel wooled it and it looks like a decaying branch. YMMV.

Swedish Mauser? If so, grab it, they are sweet.:thumb:
Yes, I i.d.'d it the other day, 6.5X55, I can get the 6.5 and a 8mm (in a Boyd's butthole stock) for $200. I think I'll be buying and building a couple Mausers. The 8mm will be my son's first deer rifle (already has scope mounts :thumb: ) and the 6.5 will be my next long-range project rifle.

Odumbass doesn't have the authority to do what you think he does. Political pandering for the libtards is all he can do.
Purists look away...

NICE! What stock is that? I like it! :thumb:

If MN's were as scarce as mint condition as-issued Lee Enfield Longbranch-made No 4's, I'd find an old beat bubba to cut down. Until then call me Bubba or worse, I'll try not to grin.

Meanwhile, I have an MN that isn't in very great shape that I'll cut down to 20" and either fit the barrel band back on the original cut back wood, or if it rings my chimes, I might even throw the loot for an ATI stock, bolt-on scope mount and put a cheap mil-dot on it.

I ran across this old thread and liked some of the pics of the tricked out Mosins. I have been resisting the urge to get one because they are so dirt cheap, but it might be fun to buy one as a project gun. Are there good hunting rounds available for them?

Since it's been resurrected i will throw my 2 cents in.
I am a Mosin Purist but also a believer in Property rights ie. it's your rifle do what you want with it.

I have several Stock Mosin's that I will never alter.
I also have some sporters.

I bought this M91/30 in it's current condition. It came with all original parts and can be restored to Original Condition.
That is until I have the bolt bent.

S&K scope mount w/Pistol scope.
Huber Trigger.
Boyds (I think) Stock

I built two Identical M38 Sporters, back when they were $100 rifles.
I sold the M44 Stocks to finance the builds.
Other than the Bolt they can be restored with a new stock.

ATI Stock
Leapers UTG Scope Mount w/pistol scope
Bolt by "The Bolt Man", Smoothest Mosin bolt's I've ever cycled.

And just for grins.

Enfield Sporter in .45 Acp.
I sent my old mis-matched Enfield with hacked up stock to Special Interest Arms.
They do great work.

I threw my '42 izzy in an archangel chassis, in OD. 10 round mags, scope mount, bipod and all these add-ons just make it more fun. Not everything done to a gun has to have a reason or make sense. It can be about fun. You've got your mosin that's in it's original condition, and that's cool. I can revert mine to its original state any time. I've saved many hundreds of dollars instead of buying a Rem. 700 or something else. To each's own.

I sporterized my Mosin this spring and have never looked back. I used it as a chance to teach myself to change and in-letted the stock, Glass bedded the receiver and barrel channel, free floated the barrel, change the trigger to a Timney trigger. Also added a Rock Solid scope mount, bent bolt handle and new Nikon 4-12 power scope. I did all the work myself and it shoots like a dream. I took a gun that I shot 2-3 times in the 3 years I'd owned it and turned it into the gun I enjoy shooting the most. Don't let the purists talk you out of improving your rifle.
