Shipping (rifle) optics from US to Europe?

Hey guys

I wish to buy a Holosun/Primary Arms HS503G with the ACSS reticle so I can use it with my magnifier. Currently I have a 2.5x on my AR-15, however I miss the normal red-dot because I got so used to it.

Problem is, it is only being sold in the US.

Question: how do I get it to Europe?

Option 1: One of the first options is to ask a friend to order it and then ship it to me directly.
Problem: *Some* say this is illegal (some law saying military grade stuff cannot be exported from the US) and could potentially cause me and my buddy serious problems (don't want to be airstriked just yet :D:). Do all private shipments get checked by US Customs? Can it be tracked back to my buddy (wouldn't want that)?

Option 2: On my next trip to the US, order it and take it in my checked luggage. Is this possible, or will it still get me into trouble if searched?

I'm not familiar with the laws and want to avoid problems, so any input from your side would be welcome.

Best regards,
Andi

Let me clarify:

  • I am not sure what is illegal and what is not. E.g. a company selling a red-dot without an export license does not (in my opinion) fall under the same category as a friend sending me the optic I forgot at his place.
  • Assuming there is an issue with the latter, but the mails (UPS, DHL, whatever) can be shipped, I am willing to take the risk.

On some forums, people said they were able to take optics in their luggage, other argued that red-dots (such as the one I'm after) aren't really explicitly "military grade" making the laws non-applicable.

I'm trying to make sense of this situation and assess the do-ability as well as potential risks.

EDIT: we have nothing similar, only standard dots and eventually circles, however nothing to measure distances. Even the ACSS I got was a wonder. On the other hand, I don't have thousands of dollars for something that might be similar, but from a no-name company, with questionable quality.

Obviously I don't want that, but that's the info I gathered on the internet. If the paranoia is running so high that simple $200 optics are considered as potentially aiding terrorism (the situation and premise in itself being ironic and absurd considering the facts) then obviously it makes little sense to try anything directly. Hell, probably discussing this will land me on some Freedom list.

I guess I'll wait for the Chinese to make a copy and get it from them ;)

PS: appreciate the info, hoped for more nuance in the laws, but seems to be quite clear.

As the guys have said, You'd need an import license to bring the scope (DOD restricted) into the country. There is a good chance that your buddy could ship it to you labeled so something else and it never get checked. However, if it were to get checked you could find yourself in a world of hurt! Even more so if the powers that be decide to make an example of you.
It just isn't worth it.

Only Optics Planet and Primary Arms are selling them on Amazon and I guarantee they won't ship it out of the country if it's on the DOD list.

He might find a dum-dum on Ebay that will ship it, but that still doesn't fix the problem he'll have if he's caught receiving it overseas.

Don't encourage someone to break the law even if you don't agree with said law, because it's not you that might end up in a cell.

Try looking for a European dealer.

ITAR are the export restrictions you're up against, and I also wouldn't violate them. It's not smart to go to prison, and I'd never forgive myself if an optic I shipped out was used against an American, a European ally, a Kurd, or any innocent person.
