Sheeple exist in large quantities. I believe even more than the 90 - 97% that is sometimes quoted.

My wake up call for the day. I was in Tampa today at a lunch meeting. Was with 4 other men. All business professionals. College graduates. Ages 40's, 50's, one early 60's. One an MBA, one a CPA, the other two were business professionals. Highly intelligent, quality folks. One very liberal democrat, the other three moderate to mild conservatives. The conversation ranged from the Treyvon shooting (only a hour and a half away) to the upcoming Republican National Convention in Tampa.

One of the guys was bitching about how bad the traffic was going to be, the increased level of security and no firearm zones. He said that he didn't care about that part because he didn't own a firearm. Never has owned one, never shot one.

So he then went around the table asking if anyone there actually owned a gun.
Person 1: no gun, never shot one.
Person 2: no gun, never shot one
Person 3: no gun, went skeet shooting once.
Person 4: no gun, had never even physically picked up a gun in his life.

They got to me and I just said "nah, none". Figured why open that can of worms for no reason.

Anyway, the point is that these are all intelligent, professional, family types. Rest assured with that attitude toward weapons I am sure that they have not a prepping bone in their little toe. Most of the rest of the conversation was about how the economy was slowly turning around and we should be alright.

BEWARE THE SHEEPLE. THEY HAVE BREACHED THE PERIMETER.

But i see it as there are some people that you can do that with and others... it is best to not say a thing.... depending upon what city... there might be a positive response to the can of worms being opened, but sometimes it can go the other way and real fast....

If he does though... it could work, but i would do it very cautiously and gently breach that subject...

What I've found is this: I say something like "I think it's a good idea to put aside food and water in case of an emergency situation". The sheeple gives me a look like I just stepped off a rocket ship from Jupiter. Sheeple just simply DON'T GET IT-NEVER WILL!!!
I'm sorry to say I think the overwhelming majority of the population are CERTIFIED SHEEPLE!

This only falls into deaf ears if you have poor social skills ...

I don't really preach about anything I do. If someone asks about the wall of food in my garage, I just respond nonchalantly that its incase I lose my job with another economic contraction, i can keep expenses (food) down while i look for more work.

and if they're insistently inquisitive, just refer back to the personal insurance, fire extinguisher, airbag comparisons.

you wont need it until you do.

--

i treat the conversation as very boring and "why are you interested" connotations. I respond to their questions, as if they are asking me about a particular brick in my driveway. "big deal, doesnt everybody do this?" kind of way.

then again, if you have the social skills of a Koala Bear, it'd be no wonder if they think your a kook or worse...

My own daughter is a liberal Austinite who has reservations about guns. And this girl grew up with me! That's what spending $100K on Communist college professor's get's ya. :headshake:

Talking about the Co. shooting, she recoiled about large clips for assault guns. I reminded her that the second amendment was for her protection from her own government. I asked her "so you think your government should be the only one's with automatic and large clip / belt fed weapons?" "Who would stop them if a Hitler was their commander?"

I think a light bulb went off in her over-educated head.

Austin is a great university, if you ignore the Commie professors.

I sent my little girl and my $100K to College Station, and she came back hard core and ready for her AR-15.....Met her husband there and now when we talk about their new baby daughter's college fund, her husband says she can go anywhere she wants to, but if she expects daddy to pay for it, it will be A&M LOL

I dont talk about anything except the coming dollar devaluation and how people better be ready for it. Around here in the Houston area most people are finally getting worried about the national debt.

I gotta agree with the way you handled that C5...Individuals like this would have discussed you, your views, etc after you left if they thought you favored firearms...People like this don't comprehend someone who doesn't depend on alarm systems and authorities for protection...No Doubt they would have come to the conclusion that you were dangerous and a threat to their way of life when in fact it's the other way around...

So these are "college graduates", "highly intelligent" and "quality folks". But because they don't own firearms, that makes them sheeple?

Maybe I'm just not clear on the lingo around here, but if firearm ownership is all it takes to avoid the label, it seems like over 97% sheeple is an overestimate of around a hundred million people or so.

No, the firearm discussion was just part of the overall conversation, only part of which I shared here. Some of the conversation included their views on the economy, upcoming elections, Obama, etc. And it is my opinion.

Anyway...

As I reflect back on our conversation, I forgot to mention one of their other views. One of them mentioned that he sees no reason why there should even be private ownership of guns. Another one said... hunting, going to a range, home defense, etc. The first one said - hunting is cruel, police are for your protection and this little nugget of opinion about gun ranges. He believes that there can be gun ranges for sport shooting. Run by the government. Where you can check out a firearm, shoot it then at the range, and check it back in. Like a library book. The rest agreed that would be adequate and appropriate.

Sheeple I say. And proof I need to eat lunch with different folks.

I hate the term, I find it to be more derogatory to the user than the intended recipient.

It's like a kid saying that they'd never join the Army because you have to wear a uniform, then they go and mingle with their mates, all wearing the same brand jeans, shoes, shirts and hats.

I suggest a swear filter, replacing "sheeple" with "unprepared".

Hands up who agrees with me:)

I've been in similar situations. My reply is always, "I had a .22 when I was a kid." Not only is this true, it is not intimidating to most sheeple. It also opens up conversation in the direction that I choose. I then can either continue with anecdotal info or drop the whole thing right then and there.

I always refer to my table saw in these types of conversations, and how it makes me nervous when I am ripping a long board, or cutting a large piece of plywood. This way I appear to be more like the sheeple I'm talking with than a Rambo type.

Just because someone has never held a real firearm, doesn't mean they never want to.

Living in WV keeps these situations to a minimum though, most people here are familiar with firearms.

Same here Skully, I think the fear of firearms is an urban and cultural (state) thing. We have some of those in Houston, but once you get past the Beltway, they are rare. It doesnt matter the level of education or profesional competence, out here, beyond the immediate suburbs, I doubt if there is one house in 50 that doesnt have some form of firearm

I have come to the sad realization that most people seem to want to put themselves in a position where in a protracted shtf situation they would ultimately become cannon fodder. I had a fascinating conversation with a pro-gun Croatian a while back talking about gun laws in his country where partisans (armed civilians) had to fight off the nazis, then pro-nazi ustase. Guns were then banned under communism only for civilians to need them again when the utopian communist Yugoslav state (predictably)collapsed and genocidal paramilitaries intent on ethnic cleansing turned up.

Even after all these events which might suggest a gun is a handy thing to have, he was telling me how many people want to see them banned now!?!

As far as Im concerned the sheeple can live without guns if they can live with the consequences
