Self defense weapon in UK

I'm going to be living in the UK for the next 6 years (for university), and I wanted to know if there are any weapons I could legally keep around in case civilization goes down the drain. I know firearms are pretty much out of the picture, and spears or crossbows would probably draw unwanted attention. I was thinking about a slingshot, since even though it's not exactly a lethal weapon a metal pellet can still do some damage, and if someone saw one in my dorm room they wouldn't think too much of it.

Any advice from UK residents would be appreciated.

A dog living in a campus dorm, sticks?! Only people are permitted bud. They are rather tight-fisted, especially the ones run by private companies like those Jarvis tarts responsible for that derailing a few years back. Stacks of rules.

stant are you serious about the tomahawk iraq connection..

Im afraid when it comes to self defence in the UK the law prefers to look after the criminal and not the victim.
There was a case where 2 hoods broke into a farmhouse to rob it and the owner a TONY MARTIN had a shotgun and fearing for his life killed one and injured the other, he was then arrested and put in prison for murder, im not sure for how long now...he was finally released after much public protests regarding self defence in your own home!!! the law is an ass.
so you could have in your dorm ....heavy chain and padlock for your bike...this would leave a nice dent and is perfectly safe to own.
cricket bat as mentioned, large maglite torch for heavy damage.
generally we are talking blunt force trauma weapons not anything that can slash.
mmm a broom stick is good as a BO staff with some training,
most youths in the uk carry knives which are illegal over 3.5inches so be aware of groups of youths as they will have a blade or 2 on them.
where in the UK will you be ? Im from Norwich which is on the east coast of england.
I did martial arts ...karate...they cant take your fists away!
hope this helps:thumb:

I'm going to be In St. Andrew's, Scotland for the first three years and then either Cambridge or Manchester the next three. My wrestling coach in high school was a professional MMA fighter, so I picked up a fair amount of unarmed self-defense. I guess a cricket bat could be a decent option; who knows, I might even enjoy playing cricket.

Avoid using the term "weapon". Tool, sporting item, antique collectable but not "weapon".;)

Legally any object can be termed an offensive weapon if it is used in an offensive manner, fountain pen or machete. In fact Glasgow youths were using Biro pens to stab one another in the neck, a pen isn't an offensive weapon but used in that manner it is.

You can EDC a non locking 3 inch folder, although don't take it to a football match or night club because the police will have cause to take it off you if they search you (which is fairly unlikely to happen anyway, its nevered happened to me).

You can keep sporting equipment and tools in your room (baseball bats, hockey sticks, axes, outdoor knives), but don't go flashing the blades around. 18yr old students will probably think you're a nutter and grass you up to someone in the university.

I would look into the university rules on whether you can keep crossbows and air rifles in your room (although what no one sees, no one will know about will they? Discretion is best advised!).

Find out if there's a uni archery or air rifle club, if there isn't there'll be one near by.

As for Tony Martin he had his licence revoked (for dangerous theatening behaviour) some years before the shooting, his guns were illegally owned and (rightly or wrongly) he shot a 15yr old in the back (killing him).

When out and about use common sense. Don't get drunk out of your skull and then try walking home through Moss Side (Manchester).

While I see your point and I for one dont think Mr Martin should have served 1 day in jail your missing at least 1 point, if he'd owned the guns legally and if he'd shot them in his house not running away from it, he probably wouldnt have recieved such sentence as he did. Here's the get out of jail free card (not quite but it'll help no end)

I was in fear of my life and acted instinctively
If his guns had been legal and he'd shot them on site using that quote to the police, given the history of break ins at his farm, I doubt he'd have done jail time.

Back to OP go with whatever your comfortable with and can use effectively just dont go flashing it about and you'll be ok imo.

Hahaha, "self defence weapon in the UK" what's that then??????

The law is utterly useless when it comes to what you can do to defend yourself. It mostly always favours the aggressor and not the victim.

It states that you can use reasonable force to defend yourself, but trying to prove that is quite hard (your word against his so to speak)

There are instantces where people have got off without charge but these are incredibly rare.

My advice to you is to learn to fight with your body (fists, feet, head etc).

Ok so I read the facts of the case, It still doesnt change anything that two Intruders broke into his farm, (whether or not he was nuts and possessing illegal firearms) by the way Im from Norfolk and the people who broke in where Gypsies...travellers who are known to be dangerous.
and proceeded to attempt to rob him for the umpteenth time and he defended himself!
They just picked the wrong night and farm to break into!
I agree both sides where wrong in some form but Tony Martin WAS NOT breaking into their home was he!

Pretend your blind and get the dog anyway. Probably get a tuition discount too. If it's like the US minority scolarships just tell them you're back, Irish, Chinese whatever they're paying the highest for. When they say you're not ???? tell them you're blind and that's what your parents told you they are.:D:

Or you could get a T handle screwdriver that'll fit in your pocket. One that will work like a punch knife just a bit blunt on the end though. Hang it on your keyring.

Bad advice for the UK. Anything carried with the intent of being used for self defence is by definition an offensive weapon in the UK - including things that you are quite permitted to carry were it for some other purpose. The only things I have heard of people getting away with carrying are the frankly laughable stoppared spray and possibly a kubaton.

You aren't allowed to carry anything with the intention of using it as a weapon, full stop. Use that "push dagger" of yours and they will throw the book at you.

The only things you are allowed to use as a weapon in self defence are things you "just happened to have with you" for some other purpose. Like for example, if you "just happen" to keep your keys attached to 2 foot of chain on your belt to stop you from losing them, then they couldn't really complain if you swing em like a flail if someone tries to mug you.

Stupid laws I know, but that's the way it is.

Thread is going off on a tangent here? This wasn't about an every day carry item, usual home defence or self-defence law but for when "civilisation goes down the drain". Therefore suggestions should surely be in the form of items which may be legally kept at one's residence, as described in the first post. And one can legally own much more than a screwdriver, cane or umbrella..

Sock and lose change... Works well... I carry an extra sock and some change officer what about it? Its just money and if my feet smell I can change my socks..

Other idea walking stick you can always walke with a cane.. dont have to need it but you can simply say I hurt my leg years back and it helps keep the persure off it..
