You can do any and all of that with a much cheaper non brandname shovel as long as you chose your shovel carefully.

They are more expensive now. When I got mine it was like $14.00. Of course, that was in like 1996 or and 1995.

 

That's a pretty good shovel BUT the old U.S. Army entrenching tool is better. The Army e-tool has a swivel head that allows you change it's positioning by 90 degrees. The kind I'm talking about is the older model, not the newer tri-fold shovel. Here's a listing of what I mean:

And if you shop around, you can get a cover for them too that will attach to most belts or military rucksacks.

Yeah, the new tri-fold shovels are mostly crap

 

got a glock e-tool,nice design,sturdy and it has a built in saw

 

The Soviet Spatnaz shovel the only way to go. It can replace having to carry a machete and to a more limited degree a hatchet.

I was first shown this shovel by a man who trains with former KGB. the soviets stopped giving them to the troops because so many were killing each other with them.

The sheath I have is black, heavy duty leather.

this is cold steel shovel, and has nothing to do with russia.

Among russian survivalists community, the highly recommended small shovel are the ones made in russia during WWI, before 1917. You can find them on ebay at around $50.

 

The Cold Steel Shovel is the Russian Spetznaz combat shovel. That is what they cloned when they started to make them.

Thats not what I am saying. I am saying there is no such thing as "Spetznaz shovel".
Russia military has small infantry shovel (МПЛ-50) and big entrenching shovel (БСЛ-110) Nunbers actually mean length of the shovel in centimeters.
Until 1943 russian shovels (as well as german, swiss and others) were forged, and used rivets to attach to the handle, and special ring to make it even more rigid.

After 1943 it became stamped and more like the shovels you see today.

The common knowledge in russia is that quality wise pre 1943 shovels are the best but a litlle heavier, then the ones made before 1985 and after that it was garbage.

 

My butcher uses one to cut my steaks, you should see how it slices soft bread and tomatoes razor thin, good for dicing garlic too.
