Rem 870 or Glock 36

Ok, this weekend, I was camping with some buddies of mine. I recently acquired a Remington 870 Super Mag (2 3/4, 3, 3 1/2) with "tactical" folding stock, extended mag tube, pistol grip for the pump, heat shield, etc. It is basically a tactical pump shotgun that everyone thinks is really cool.
So, I pull it out to show one of my buddies and he drools all over it. He spent most of his life in the military so he likes the 870. He takes it, starts fiddling with it, checking it over and then says..."I'll trade you a single stack Glock in .45" He then mentions that I would probably be getting the better deal but then ran through his head the cost of the folding stock, forend, and all the other junk on it, on top of the fact it was not a simple 870 Express but it was a 870 Supermag. Keep in mind, I just took it because I just acquired it, wanted to fire a few rounds to check it out and take it back and put it in the safe. I figured I would try to sell it for $300-350 at the most.

He pulls out the Glock 36 and shows it to me. I fondle it a while and I said, "If you want to make the deal and are OK straight up, I will trade with you.."

We shook and traded..... He is happy and I am happy.

So, who got the better deal? What say you? I had no use for the 870 and recently bought a Springfield XDs in .45 ACP so both are a bit redundant for me. I figure I can sell the G36 much more easily than the pimped out pump.

Your thoughts?

Value is in the eye of the seller and potential buyer. A new 870 in that configuration is $400 or so. Then you add all the "tactical" stuff and who knows. To me, the Glock is an easier weapon to sell due to all the Glock fans. I simply didn't need another pump shotgun. (I really don't like the slide release on the 870). I just figured some would think the small Glock might not have been a great trade. For me,I am really not sure but feel good about the trade as of today.

Quick FYI- the Super Mag IS an Express model. Same thing like my Tactical, which I admit I did not know when I impulse bought it... the receiver says Remington 870 Tactical so I thought I was getting an upgraded model, but it is indeed an Express with tactical features. As is your Super Magnum, it's an 870 Express with a 3 1/2" chamber. (I mean you no harm nor insult, I just don't want you to misjudge a trade due to overvaluation, that's all).

See IMHO unless you're getting a SMOKING deal in a trade, it comes down to likes, wants, needs, and a little value. Do you really really like the other thing, and/or do you DISLIKE what you have? Do you need something really bad? Or not at all need what you're trading? And are you getting a smoking deal?

I have 4 shotguns in my 30+ gun collection but I only own one handgun myself (Other family members have some though). So I could get rid of a shotgun for a handgun in a heartbeat, but, I love my shotguns, I collect them. So I'd have a hard time doing it. Do you have a big need for the .45 G36? I actually have lusted over it once or twice but read ppl either love or HATE them, some people love it (having a Glock-reliable miniature .45, reliable, man-stopping power in a pocket-pistol size) some people hate it, recoil and size etc.

For this, search your heart and soul, and if necessary flip a coin :)

Play with that 36 more and you'll find you came out better. Shotgun is easier and cheaper to replace (the little Glocks are hard to find around me, anyway), from the slide release comment you sound like more of a Mossy kind of person anyway, and that 36 sure works great! Loves mine to death and it's all kind of accurate when I do my part. Works great in smaller hands.

I'd say you ended up with the better deal. A perfect example, take a look at armslist. Whenever people are open to trades, 90% of them say NO SHOTGUNS, because they already have one. Usually they already have multiple shotguns.

Like Nomad, 2nd stated above, you'll never get your money out of the accessories. It's like building a hot rod. You'll never get what you put into it back, if you sell it.

The glock will always be a good seller, because of the fan base. Lot's of people don't have a place to shoot shotguns (me included), only handgun and small rifle ranges near me. So lot's of people like handguns for this reason too.

Funny I also own about 30 and don't own an AR-15.

I did, sold it when I needed money real bad once, and there wasn't anything I could do but sell it (for a very good price IMHO, I did okay.) And never bought another, I am going with .308 and 7.62x39, imho they do the 200yds and < and 600 yd and > better than a 5.56 that does all of that pretty okay but that's not the point, it's just what I wanted to do. Now I get by with a 15-22 for my tactical fantasies and tacticool training / range commandoing.

Update to the thread. I had some buddies over last night and one of them has a Glock 26 and Glock 27 (9mm and 40 S&W) I mentioned what I had done to him and immediately, his ears perked up and he wanted to see it. I showed it to him and he asked if I was going to sell it. I said, possibly. he asked me how much and I threw out $500. He thought it was a fair price and asked me if he could get back with me this weekend and that he may buy it for the $500.

Another guy came into my office today and I told him about it (keep in mind, both of these guys are close enough to me that I would open my gun safe for them as they have done the same for me) and he said, let me know if your neighbor doesn't want it. I might get it from you.

I guess that settles it.. The Glock will be no trouble to unload (no pun intended) if I decide to (or in this case if my neighbor decides he wants it). I still have the Springfield XDs in .45 which is very similar to the G36. I think I did OK on the trade for sure.

Glock 36 is a nice weapon bro. I am not a fan of Remington 870's personally....except for maybe the old wingmasters. I think they are overrated and am a Mossberg and Benelli guy myself. That said, I think you got the better end of the deal. The Glock would probably be worth $450 and the Remington $100 less IMHO.
