A group of about two dozen protestors were arrested in front of the white house protesting the middle east wars. Why are they arrested when thousands trash the capitol in Madison and this is deemed permissible? Doesn't this seem quite unfair?

how come in U.S.A., you get arrested for protesting, but our own government was telling theses other countries that they have a RIGHT to protest. i was really inflamed when i seen that.

Because over here there are certain places that you can protest at and certain places you can not protest at. In addition any and all protests are meant as a display of displeasure about something like an issue. You also have to have certain or the right permits. For example, you can generally protest a government building and should have gotten the permit for the protest a day or two before it. Most places do not allow protests in residential areas or on private property. But if you are protesting a business, you can do it on the sidewalk/street in front of the place. In some protests, the size of the protest group is limited by court order. This is sometimes done for environmental reasons or to limit damage, etc. done by larger groups.

In some cases the protest isn't really all that important to the public. Years ago when Rachel Corrie got killed by a bulldozer, there was a demonstration at the world headquarters of Caterpillar Tractor. The sum total of all the demonstrators were a grand total of 4 people. The local news barely covered it at all. So demonstrations have their limits over here but those limits are based of judicial review and common sense.

As we (some of us at least) found out during the Vietnam War, people here in the US who are protesting the involvement of the US Military in wars overseas do nothing to shorten the war or get our troops out. In fact, protests here in the US endangered our POWs in Vietnam, increased their pain and suffering, and actually lengthened the war. One of the commanding Vietnamese generals said that it was protests in the US that strengthened their resolve and helped in their decision to keep fighting.

It is one thing to protest things that are going on here at home. It is quite another to protest our activities overseas. I have never seen the latter produce an positive results, but I have seen the negative results.
