Yes, they did indeed make some good points and I wholeheartedly agree with some of the panel members--especially about water rights being an issue in the future. There were two of the panel members that just seemed to babble at the mouth and totatlly dismissed anything anyone else had to say.

As far as the robots, i'll settle for a brunette and a redhead-or maybe both?

why are all prophets, prophets of doom.... " beware the ides of March" " dont eat chocolate this coming sunday." " thru sybils lute and davids Lyre all the world will melt in fire" please

Why cant we have just one Happy prophet who gives out lotto numbers or tells you who the perfact date for you is and where they live.

and I agree on the redheaded robot LOL.

we know return to the Doom and Gloom of life altering prophecy. LOL

I agree that they seemed to toss the "artificial intelligence" guy in there, just to fill in. (And to get some of you guys talking about blondes and etc. and forget about the subject at hand!) But it did serve to point out 4 possible scenarios: Financial collapse; over population and it's demands on water and the pollution thereof; the end of easily attainable (I.E. cheap) oil; and terrorist nukes. They should have had something about pandemic disease, as well.

It served to highlight just a few of the reasons the future is not so rosy.

The population clock estimates that in the six months from Jan. 1, 2011 to July 1, 2011 the world population will increase by 37,551,515. That is about 208,620. more mouths to feed each and every day! One of every eight Americans recieve assistance with food right now and we are considered to be better off than many countries. The shortage of food will only get worse! Food storage looks like a very good idea! :)

Just one more thing to think about: US Census indicates that the 2009 population of California was 36,961,664. The above information indicates that the world population is increasing by about the size of California every six months.....whoa!

I think they made a lot of valid points. Michael Ruppert has a website called Collapsenet. His videos used to be all about financial issues. This past week, he has changed to a message of preparedness and is encouraging his readers to get at least 3 months of food and water in storage. Big change of tune, if you knew this guy. So, how many of you are actually SERIOUS about being prepared? Things are not getting better out there. Being ready too soon beats the hell out of wishing you had a day late.

The other big name on the panel was Kunstler.

I thought it was an excellent program. Well-spoken thinkers with suitable scientific expertise and/or experience in their fields.

I don't stomach well Kunstler's and Ruppert's politics and spiritual bents respectively, but this program overall was a refreshing serious attempt at macro risk assessment.

In the end, the panel decided that the world's tenuous water supply is the biggest immediate danger to civilization. Next on the looming threat scale is the economic/financial situation.

Bottom line--they said many big changes are in process with regard to how we are accustomed to living today and more are around the corner. Not all are predictable--lots of wild cards in the deck--but volatility and scaling down of lifestyles is guaranteed.

I see water and oil as being major sources of friction that could trigger other catastrophes but not catastrophes themselves in the US. The US can adapt to a reduced standard of living or a harsher climate without great hunger or hardship. If we are set back 50 years, 1961 had a darned good standard of living if you ask me. Heck, even 1911 was pretty good.

China and India can't afford any drop at all or it is back to famines again. Large areas of Africa and Asia are already so far behind that getting up to our "1911" would be an incredible improvement. They could fall back to the stone age. It IS a recipe for vast regional wars.

If we could just "go" back to 1961 era levels of food, energy, population, government, etc. it would be great! However the population of the US was approx. 183,691,000 in 1961. Today it is approx. 310,000,000. That means that you would be sharing that 1961 era bowl of soup with over 126 million more people. (Just add another can of water?) :)

WHAT we ate, was different back then in the 60's too. I remember far fewer fast food type places, and the food ate at home was mostly home cooked meals. Not a whole lot of people cook that way these days. Lots of pre-made frozen instant food. I sure can see the idea about eating foods that were locally grown, as being something we will have to get back to. It makes good sense both from a fuel standpoint not to haul things so far, and to support local growers. Besides, hothouse tomatoes they try and sell us up here (Northern Wisconsin) this time of year don't taste like anything, anyway!

I wasn't around for it but back in WWII an awful lot of people dug up their yards to have a Victory garden. It was a significant increase in national food output. In Britain it was much more important. I am old enough to remember people in the city having poultry in the back yard.

Like the one guy said, would it feed everyone? No. But it would mean a lot less food had to be grown commercially and transported. Even in urban areas there are parks and empty lots and rooftops and parkway medians that could be called into use. Swimming pools could become hydroponic gardens or fish farms. Prize up the pavement in those malls and Wallmart parking lots and put in fields of potatoes and beans.

HUH?

Don't dismiss the A.I. stuff, haven't you seen movies about SkyNet and Umbrella Corp? What about the Matrix. Zombies could even be created by a computer malfunction. What about I Robot? Etc.
The food thing is something we could all fix and the above quote is great. Prepping requires you to be prepared for danger in and of all forms. So much of what I hear from time to time is stuff just like the stuff I mentioned first. The funny thing is SHTF every time you go to shop or call a company and they tell you "the computers are down"...that seems to be the new the dog ate my home work BS! The evil forces at work are using and corrupting computers all the time, you should fear anything like computers where all your info is stored and can be accessed by anyone(with the right skills or connections) at any time. Arrogance will be our demise, computers are ruling our lives and controlling our money and how we earn it. They will control your work, rest and play if you let them!

On a side note my mother is a computer programer, she loved the terminator movies but all ways kept saying that there is no way it can happen because computers are in reality so dumb and can not think for itself.I finally got it explained to her where she changed her mind when I said one brain cell can do nothing on its on but when you link millions together you get intelligence, independent thought and self awareness.
How long before all the millions of electronic devices networked together worldwide develops the same capabilities of a living brain. All that is needed is whatever magic spark it would take for it to think "I am HERE" I guess that would be the moment of senescence,I think therefore I am....getting into thought that is above me but hope I made a point.
Funny to think that I very well could be using a single brain sell of a global electronic brain right now.
I do believe if it ever happened it would not be like in Terminator as most of the internet is porn so.......

All nations, empires, countries...etc...etc..fall the same way. I will be a prophet of doom for ya.

Moral degradation gives way to greed, gives way to economic collamities giving way to social unrest, giving way to the invasion and/or destruction. Either way it is the end as we know it for our once great republic which due to moral degredation at it's root problem has given way to the empire in the last 70 years alone.

If we don't get the moral fabric of our country back...it's dead

Hows that for a prophet of doom, I don't need the history channel for that, I can just open a history book and see it repeating.

Sorry this is coming from someone who hasn't owned a television or watched one in over 8 years
