Ah, something really useful for my BOB...:thumb:

It will be available this summer, according to the Palcohol website and will come in 3 flavored drink mixes (Margarita, Lemon Drop and Cosmopolitan), as well as rum and vodka.

One package weighs about an ounce and each mixed drink measure has a standard amount of alcohol. It will be sold online and in liquor stores.

Actually it's been around for years. Several companies in Europe tried to make money off it but it wasn't popular enough to get off the ground. The US government recently said they would treat it like any other form of alcohol, though they gave vague noises that might be open to scrutiny again once someone made it popular, and they have been fence jumping on the issue for a while now. First they said yes, then they said no, and now they are saying yes again.

Problem is it doesn't sell well and the startup companies always die off before they get any real traction.

One of the big concerns is that it could be the "ultimate date rape drug" because it is undetectable when sprinkled on food.

What if someone sprinkled it on a salad bar? What happens if someone ends up unknowingly and unintentionally DWI? Or it causes a reaction with medication? What happens if that person ends up having a serious accident or killing someone? Or just simply can't go to work if they realize they're impaired? The lawyers are going to make a fortune off of this.

It is not the alcohol, itself, that has an odor. It is the impurities. This is why people that drink straight good quality vodka or Everclear don't have the same smell as someone that drinks whiskey, wine, beer...

Don't ever say that Everclear is quality.... I have actually had good "nearly pure" neutral spirits. Everclear is not even close.

I don't know how unnoticeable having 60 proof salad would be, but I'm pretty sure that if someone wanted to "roofie" someone, they would probably just use Rohypnol.

And I'm thinking that the salad bar probably isn't the hot ticket for that either.

Kids will snort it.

A while back I read-up on the plight of the person who invented this product and how he has been run through the ringer by government bureaucracy.

Its alcohol, why is the government treating it any differently than a bottle of liquor? To not allow something like this would be the same as not allowing Jack Daniels on the shelf.

I fail to see the reasoning behind banning it, its controlled just like any other alcohol, minors legally cannot buy liquor but for some reason if its in powder form politicians think minors will be able to get easier than a bottle of Jack Daniels?

By what this person has had to go through and that its already banned in several states really does personify the stupidity of politicians and government, I'd use the word ignorance but it doesn't apply in this particular case.

I completely agree. Though I'm not in favor of the stuff, and can definitely imagine how it will be misused, banning these types of things is just idiocy. It's will be the new 'War On Alcoholic Powder'. Police will staff up to search kids for the powder. Powder based 'keg' parties will be a felony. The Coast Guard will get new cutters to search for black market powder.
I see it as a good sign that the government is approving this. Although I doubt it, it might imply that they are learning that people will do what they're going to do. Don't make them criminals for these things. Educated people and let them decide.

Wish it were something like dehydrated or freeze-dried powder - would love to have small wet-nap sized packets I could add to an ounce of water and have a shot whiskey. But in reality the powder packets are actually heavy and huge (by volume), and need ~6 oz. of water to dissolve for a standard mixed drink - much less than that and you can probably "eat" it with a fork.

Airline bottles and hip flasks would be far more efficient... I don't see the point.

With the way kids have sex today a bit of extra grain alcohol in those parts might limit the spread of STD's a bit.

Just for reference however, you may not smell booze on someone's breath but alcohol is released from the body via the lungs.

So even if the kids intake booze "other ways" you can still run a breathalyzer on them.

I never heard of the tampon shots, so I searched for it.

There was a lot of "so and so says this" and not much "this is what happened".

I did find two articles from women who claimed to have actually tried it. Mostly they agreed on the following results:

1. trying to insert soaked tampons was a PITA.

2. Having succeeded at #1, actually having an alcohol soaked tampon inserted hurt like hell and continued to hurt until said tampon was removed.

3. Tampons absorb a limited amount of alcohol and the likelihood of someone actually getting drunk in this method is very small. Both felt a very small buzz, but nothing that even came close to justifying pain levels experienced.

That said, the intelligence of teenagers is exceeded only by their lack of common sense (esp. in groups), so who knows.

Butt Chugging.

I am so very glad I have never heard of this before now. I can think of NOTHING more fun that 20 or 30 young males running around with asses full of beer. Having seen the aftermath of regular booze fests, I don't want to be within 50 miles of a beer-enema-fest. If I were given a choice between a beer enema or having my testicles nailed to a board and soaked in hydrochloric acid, I might pick the enema. Maybe. But I would have to think about.

Added note: Given a choice between beer enema and remarrying the ex. Bring on the enema.

Over a span of approx. 6 years, I drank more than any 10 people should in their lifetime. Never, not once, ever in my deepest alcohol fueled stupor did I ever say "Hey, booze up the ass! Now THAT'S a good idea!"

I’m sorry, but I just don’t really see the controversy. It will be a controlled substance, and it will be as easy (or as difficult) to purchase as a bottle of Jack.

Kids are always going to be kids, and do the stupid things that all kids do. To expect otherwise would just be denying the truth.

That said, the way this conversation has been going so far is completely off topic given our charter and name, survivalistboards.

This (powdered alcohol) isn’t anything new, aside from availability for the average consumer to purchase it.

I think its a great plus. I think that it will be awesome to finish off the day, after a long hike, sitting around the camp fire with friends and family, and sharing a nice rum or vodka based beverage. At a significantly less weight penalty than packing in a glass bottle of hooch.

I know I’m not the first person here who though that. Its only sad that this discussion has been going on since 16 March and no one else said it.

Just note that powdered alcohol has no weight savings. It isn't dehydrated. It is merely absorbed in a sugar compound.

If anything, the weight will increase.

Any weight savings would be purely in packaging.
