In a shocking development, police begin "guns drawn" raids on organic food stores in California. George speaks with an owner of Rawsome, a Venice beach organic food store caught up in one of the raids. The coverage of this story by the Los Angeles Times caused a firestorm online with many groups concerned about abuse of police powers and unnecessary safety regulations concerning the consumption of organic and raw foods.

Some people balk at restrictions on selling unprocessed milk and other foods. 'How can we not have the freedom to choose what we eat?' one says. Regulators say the rules exist for safety and fairness.
With no warning one weekday morning, investigators entered an organic grocery with a search warrant and ordered the hemp-clad workers to put down their buckets of mashed coconut cream and to step away from the nuts.
Then, guns drawn, four officers fanned out across Rawesome Foods in Venice. Skirting past the arugula and peering under crates of zucchini, they found the raid's target inside a walk-in refrigerator: unmarked jugs of raw milk.
"I still can't believe they took our yogurt," said Rawesome volunteer Sea J. Jones, a few days after the raid. "There's a medical marijuana shop a couple miles away, and they're raiding us because we're selling raw dairy products?"

Such battles have had a chilling effect on some retailers. Whole Foods Market used to carry raw milk and raw milk products in California and three other states. But in March, the chain pulled all but a few cheeses off its shelves. Part of the reason, it said in a statement, was "the realities of the very high additional costs for liability insurance ... because of the potential risks from selling unpasteurized milk and milk products."

Rawesome was born of consumer frustration. In 1998, James Stewart — a vegetarian who drank raw milk — couldn't find the stuff in Southern California grocery stores. So he started making road trips to dairies in northern California and to Whole Foods in San Jose, which at the time carried raw milk. Word spread. Family and friends wanted it too.

Drawing down on a person with a loaded gun is evidence of the police officer's willingness to shoot that person. You NEVER point a loaded gun at someone that you don't accept the possibility of shooting, even if by accident or reflex.

Police and the state are way out of control. They don't care about people anymore:

I guess if you aren't in uniform you are the enemy.

That story hits way too close to home .... We had a roommate earlier this year. She was separated from her boyfriend, while they were trying to work things out. Her boyfriend came over early one morning, because he had tried to call her, but she didn't answer the phone.

He thought she was using illegal drugs, and called 911. The police came out first, and searched through our home for illegal drugs, found her medicine and were treating this lady like she was a criminal!

She was taking some kind of pain medication, but was definitely not a druggy! She was my roommate, and I saw her everyday, and so did my boys. There was nothing wrong with her, except that she had serious medical issues and using prescription medication ....

I'm surprised the police didn't find my pain medication (vicodine and more!). They had dogs searching all around our house, like my house was a drug lab or something ....

Wonder what would have happened if I had refused to allow the police to search my home .....

Good point. CA cannot seem to elect a conservative, no matter how big and intrusive the government gets.

In any case, the bureaucrats and police are essentially just enforcers for industrial agriculture, masquerading as public health officials. They know that small, independent farms and dairies are (and always have been) the bedrock of liberty in this country. That is why they are the first ones targeted by a repressive government. Although I suspect many of the police would be appalled if they understood what was going on and how they are being used as tools.

The idea that a hardworking, taxpaying, responsible adult cannot choose to purchase and consume raw milk is just plain offensive.

of course,,, standard Op... they have no idea what the old hippies are gonna dfo... it has not been that long since many of tthose same old hippies were part of assorted groups like the weather underground..... so they are fully within their rights to do so... it is a shame, yes, But not within anything that could be considered extreme or illegal...

This is nothing new...

Here in the Midwest, which use to be the dairy capital…but CA/FL are 1 and 2 now. There is a growing raw milk underground. It is the “organic” crowd that is buying the milk, but the states that ban it are using the same tactics like in your article.

I have heard in other states that dairy farmers are turning in their neighbors that sell raw milk.

I never have either... but i am gonna damn sure set down and shut my mouth... and politely say ..."Yes sir and No sir"..

I have a problem with intimidation in the first place... so it might take a little doing on my part, but i think I could adjust rather quickly...at least for the present moment.

MOST are not that way. Most are polite but as firm and as rough as they have to be. At least where I live. They are my neighbors, relatives, and friends, some of them. But they do get cynical if they work mostly with creeps, smart a**ses, and druggies all day every day. Going in with guns drawn to arrest raw milk sellers is definitely over the top, though. Maybe that's their orders.

I get commercials in Virginia all the time about how I ought to be eating cheese from California. And someone's paying for those ads. I suspect there are cheese factories out there who have the big bucks and they're using the power of the state to quash competition. If the cops are showing up with guns drawn, and without any reason to suspect any threat of imminent serious bodily injury, that's good for a civil suit for assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress where I live.

Actually what's going on in cali is a bunch of illegal ignorants who buy a stall from some guy who owns a parking lot, advertise as being organic on 'farmer's day' with fancy signs, and yet when you go to the location of where this "organic" food is said to be growing, there's nothing there. So basically they buy from costco or whatever and then scam people for food at prices higher than if they had just went to a regular grocery store. I hope they get shot. So far they are being fined and now banned permanently but considering how many of these cockroaches exist, I'm sure they'll just change their face and be back at it the following week.
They need to ban the farm locations and to hell with the vendors unless proof is evidenced. The 'farmers' should be forced to pay for an independent source that drives out and takes pictures as proof. If they can pull the stuff and haul it they can sure as hell be made to prove it's actually organic. A store owner is no different from the guy who rents his space for a day or 2. He should be fined just as much for each offender. And preferably shot if he's a repeater. I hate liars and thieves.

What is lousy is the fact we have to go to such lengths to get anything clean to begin with and then you got these jerks who want to scam you for it. Sometimes the threat of violence is better than the actual violence. The police know this all too well.

They are debating pending legislation that would cure this ... it's called S 510.

If the law enforcement officers want or expect some respect, then show some. They serve the public!! We as Americans have been brain washed for generations to view our politicans and police as our leaders ....THEY ARE NOT!!! they are elected and hired to serve the will of the public. That really makes them in a sense a lower class citizen. If it is just the state of California doing this then the people in the state have ask for it. Now if it is the feds ,they have been passing more and more laws lately "for our own good" because they view themselves as some "UBER'' class with special powers and wisdom. RANT OFF!!! now I feel better.

All i can say is if someone tries to steal your hard earned cash straight from your wallet or even worse, tries to clean out your larder while you're not looking, he deserves to be shot. I could care less who they are. Californians are health fanatic & food crazy. Like that's news.
If given half a chance I'd simply grow my own stuff and to hell with the laws and the idiots who want to steal your money. Let 'em bleed to death for all I care.
