Plastic straw- people left- wife upset

This is in my mind quite funny:

We had family and extended family over for a cookie baking thing yesterday. The crowd was in the kitchen making and baking cookies. I don't join in those games so I was in the living room.

One of the couples have a two-and- a half year kid. Cute, well mannered kid as far as one that age can be. He was with me in the living room. He said he was thirsty so I went and got him a cup of juice and a straw. I figured he didn't need a sippy cup anymore.

His Mom, a rather rabid liberal, flipped out when she came into the room to check on him. "We don't use plastic straws", she shrieked. I was kind of surprised and just kind of looked at her and said, "Why not? He is handling it well enough." She went into a long speech about plastic straws damaging the sea life (she is some kind of ocean biologist and has a problem with straws) and said they didn't want their son using them.

So I said we had glass straws (renewal so we don't throw them away) and I'd get one. She continued on with her speech and finally said, "We're leaving because my son can't be in this environment." Then my wife's nephew came in and said, "Thanks because of you we have to leave." I may have said something like dude grow a pair but that is undocumented. ;)

So they left. My wife got ****ed at me. I was like, "Hey, I tried to fix it. I guess the glass reusable straws are also bad. Not my fault- the kid is old enough to use a straw and doesn't need a sippy cup."

No help there. Even the two sister-in-laws were mad at me. One of them was the nephew's Mom. So I grabbed my keys and left- went gun shopping. Got some more ammo but no guns. Went back about four hours later and found I still had a upset wife, but the two sister-in-laws had calmed down a bit.

Now both the nephew and his wife have unfriended me on FB. That's good because I hated their views anyway. :D: But that kind of response to a plastic straw? I try to deal with liberals but I guess sometimes you can't. Christmas should be fun,; we are going to to her family event and the two of them will be there. I'm thinking I'll take a plastic straw with me. :D: Not really, I'll try to keep the peace.

I wasn't going to post this, but it was funny in an InfScout sort of way and I thought it was worth posting.

Other than the wife being upset....I don't see any negatives there.:thumb:

I seriously cannot fathom having someone that insane hanging around my house. I have a few left wingers in the family tree...but we get along, it's just understood that if you want to throw poo, you will not be doing it here, so everyone keeps things at a low boil, and enjoys the other 90% of the life we share with no issues.

Same way with my family...mine's split between Conservative and liberal about 70/30 but everyone gets along fine because people don't argue politics. Last thing I want to do is talk politics (I get my fix online) with family members...even ones that share my same views.

Luckily I don't have any super extreme people in my family/friend circle (on either end of the spectrum) like the lady in the OP's story.

Obviously the child's mother isn't accepting. Thankfully the kid wasn't eight years old. I'd have had him outside shooting a BB gun. She is also very anti-gun. But my way of teaching kids left with me is to go to what I know that is entertaining. Kids love BB guns. They enjoy the thrill of it. Even if they can't at first hit the target. Man she would have called the cops and child services on me had I done that. ;)

Liberals are special people. Plastic straws are a minor issue to me, but a major one to them. They can find anything to melt down about and are so right just in their response. My wife has actually laughed about it today. She is now amazed a straw caused it. She is pretty conservative and after some time to think, she sees the disease they have. She posted on a closed FB page (only some of us can use) and her account was humorous. So I guess she forgave me.

NO offense, but if it were me, I would have told them all to go **** themselves... including the wife for not supporting me. A wife should stand behind her man. You should be the one angry, because if the tables were turned, she damn well would have expected you to support her.

BTW, tell the wife they aren't welcome in the house until you get a damn apology for their tirade.

And text her this:

X2, especially the last sentence. They disrespected you and your home.

You sir are surrounded by mentally ill people. I can understand someone having a stance against straws, however flawed it is, but to react like that is definitely mental illnesses.

If that woman is a marine biologist she must be the dumbest one on the planet. Plastic straws make up about .03% of the plastic in the ocean. The main bulk of plastic is commercial fish nets and gear. I would guess this woman has no issue eating Sea Bass.

What a puppet she is. I almost feel bad for her.

….There are two tragedies to your story.....that your wife is upset and that the kid has a poor chance of surviving his idiotic parents.
You know how kids like to rebel against their parents. This sort of stuff leads me to believe we're going to end up with a whole generation of conservative kids rebelling against their looney left parents. How many kids want to be just like their parents in high school?

There may be a group of high school kids hanging out in suits and ties talking fiscal policy. A new and different version of the Goths, Emos, and Flakes.

I guess they are to stupid to realize one of the easiest ways to prevent Leptospirosis is USE a STRAW. Even the military world wide recognizes and trains soldier about this in hostile environments. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leptospirosis
In most of the world, you do not drink anything without a straw. Drink straight from a can of coke and they will react like you just licked the floor. Inside a drink container is clean. The outside is not and putting your mouth on the outside of a drink container is a reliable way to end up with a disease.

The plastic BS always gets me. Ever leave something plastic outside over summer? UV light breaks down most plastics. Things that aren't coated to protect them from UV light (like a straw) break down rapidly. The problem with straws is that float? Great, that means they'll break down in a few days. Far quicker than a wood twig, with no more potential for injuring anything.

The thing that actually bothers me about the OP, is that the wife reacted the way she did. My wife would never do that. In fact my wife's spent some time in 3rd world countries and is pretty damn militant about straws. She does not react politely when she has trouble getting one in a restaurant. I've had to sneak over and raid the waiter's station for straws to keep her from making a scene.

I'm sure there has to be something InfScout did other than the straw that set everyone off. Ironically, with the way people like that are, he probably has no idea what he even did to accomplish it and the straw issue just seems like the least insane option.

Rather pity the kid, having to live in an environment like that. I can imagine that he'll never get to enjoy the outdoors/nature because humans are so destructive.

Must be a booger to live in the mom's world; she needed some road flares set out around her to warn of the tantrum that was in process.

Glad to hear that your wife came around after getting the full details of your dastardly impact on the child's psyche.

these liberal nut case,s are the same ones who wont give up their bottled water [throw away bottles plastic ] which is thousand,s of time more dangerous to all critter,s then straws. But where would they get their water, how about from the tap. those plastic water bottles and synthetic clothes and the kayak,s that these people use to protest oil [fossil] fuels are made from OIL or its bi-product,s. The tires on their cars are made partly from oil all the plastic in their smart phones and computers is made from oil the gas they put in their cars to go to march in protest is made from oil,the car seats for their kids are partly made from oil [PLASTIC} sun glass,s frames are made from plastic, the container,s that hold all those {SPECIAL PILLS] they need every day are made from plastic, TAKE away every thing that is made from oil and we would be back in the stone age, [which might not be that bad for us deplorable,s] JMO
