Pistol Training Certification

I've been an NRA certified firearms instructor for 20 years. Recently, the NRA has decided to split up the Basic Pistol Course into two parts, one on-line and one with an instructor. Students must complete phase one before moving to phase two. What this does is increase the cost for the student ($60 to take the on-line portion).

My question to all of you is, how important is it for a training class to have a certification at completion. I know in some states, this is required for application for a CCW permit, but not in others.

Let me know what you think! Thanks!

no NRA is getting a bigger cut of the class

You have to pay the NRA $60 to take the inline part. Instructor now either has to lower the price of their class or the student takes it in the wallet

Most student's don't give a rat's rear about certificates

Hopefully it'll be just a passing fad with NRA

Rob, I'm wondering if it's really that important to a person as to whether or not the program is an NRA Certified course vs. a course developed and conducted by an experienced instructor with no certification to back it up. Also, I'm curious as to why you're not renewing your certification?

NRA RSO, Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun instructor. I mainly donate my time to the Scouts and their training, merit badge classes.

The blended course was "explained" to me, that too many instructors were not fully doing the full course--ie. some range time and maybe a hour or so of class time--then the student was "certified"..

I don't like the new blended course either, as many of the BSA Scouts are having issues with the new format, cost. Also, the BSA no longer has the NRA training listed in the new "training manager", and there is no way to have it listed. I think the BSA may be moving AWAY from the NRA for the scout training, or at least trying to distance the BSA from the NRA for "PC" reasons.
