Hey guys, I've been wanting to take up shooting as a sport for a while now. In Ireland this is a rather difficult thing to do but I've been able to meet some great people who are shooting club members to help me out! :D IPSC shooting is starting to become popular in Ireland at the moment.. I've been to one competition so far as a spectator and I really enjoyed it.

I went to a pistol range for the first time this week and it was awesome. I'm starting out with a .22 but the guys there let me try out their Glocks, SIGs, CZs, Tangs! I'm hooked now.. gonna go through the safety course and become a member as soon as I can. If all goes well I hope to get my license in six months to a year, so I can take part in official competitions.

so you can use one at a club, but not to defend your family? You'd think the lawmakers were also moonlighting as criminals.

Oh yeah- That's their day job..

Yes, in Ireland the people aren't allowed to carry any type of weapon, and aren't allowed to own firearms for self-defense. However, crime rates are very low, and the criminals don't have firearms either (apart from the drug gangs who now and then just use them on each other, not their customers).

So it's not all bad. Once I have done the courses and become a member I can apply for a handgun license for sporting purposes - which is at least more reasonable than in England where they are banned completely.

I've been going to the range every week for the last month or so, been really enjoying it so far. Today I applied for a pistol licence, hopefully that will go through OK (the police are very strict here about such things!).

I was at a 25m bench-rest competition a couple of weeks ago and did pretty well - I got 264/300 which put me about half-way up the score table - not bad for a beginner I think! :)
