Is 500 dollars a good deal for a used Olympic Arms AR-15 with a couple magazines? I've read on other forums that olympic arms is a brand to avoid, this would be my first AR-15 and I was just wondering what you guys think. Is it a dependable shtf rifle? Should I jump on this or its better just to save up for a better make?...

What model is it? The guys that hate Oly hate them due to something over the ammo issuie. Its a dumb reason they blame them for the surplus ammo not being imported for a while or something.

If its a plinker model how old of a plinker is it as they did have some problems with the recievers on the first ones. They where not forged lower recievers so watch that.

I would jump on it for that price for sure even if it was an old plinker. If it was one of the old ones I would then buy a differnt reciever and still not have 700 in a used gun.

I say jump on it!!!!!!!!!!

Old Oly's had a higher rate if issues. Olympic's quality now, is light years better & improved. They have a lifetime warranty - I believe.

As far a milspec and specific hard-core AR components? (i.e. - M4 Feed ramp, staked gas tube, etc, etc) = er, no - it's a "plinker".

I have one that I bought new in 2005 = Zero issues, and very reliable.

I'd say $500.00 is a good deal.

Check out the rates of Oly's at Atlantic Firearms to compare: http://www.atlanticfirearms.com/storecategory89.aspx

There is a site that is run by fans of Olympic Arms and one of the guys or maybe a few work there.

They could probly help you out on knowing what model it is and what reciever. the site is OA2 just google that.

If you have more info I can go over and try to find out. Tell me whats on the reciever and markings and all that.

I believe they also offer the warranty to anyone who owns the gun weather or not you bought it new or used.

The price of it I would buy it and then worry about the other stuff as it can be replaced and taken care of much cheaper then buying a new AR.

Tell me is it a flat top upper with removeable carry handle if so its not a plinker. Also if it has A2 sites on it not the old style (Vietnam eara) A1 sites its not a plinker.

I still say jump on it before your friend pawns it off or sells to someone else who will get one heck of a deal.

Keep us posted and jump on it.

No. I have two stripped lowers and one complete lower. Two say .223, one says multi. The multi indicates you can use .223/5.56 and the other manlier calibers like the 6.5 Grendel, 6.8 SPC, .500 Beowulf, etc.

Look under the barrel. If it says .223, use .223 ammo. If it says 5.56, you can use .223 and 5.56 NATO ammo. Don't use 5.56 in .223 rifles. 5.56 runs at higher pressures. You can get a .223 rifle reamed to 5.56, but you may suffer some accuracy loss. YMMV.

Olympic got a bad reputation by making cast lowers for a while. They stopped making cast lowers quite a while ago though, so if the rifle is an older one, look and make sure it does not have a cast lower. If it a newer rifle it will be have a forged lower.

I like Olympic arms rifles(with the forged lower). If you can get it for $500, I say JUMP!

They are good quality guns.

If you go the Del-ton full rifle then you have shipping and FFL charges your higher now then probly just buying right from a local shop.

If you build that is the only way to keep cost down close to that price of a full rifle. I see nothing wrong with Olympic Arms.

If anyone dosnt think this is a deal due to it not being one of the ABCs is just crazy. There are a lot of ARs out there that are behind in production.

Hey guys thanks for all the positive feedback, I havent jumped on it yet, still considering it, I really want to give it a good look over and try and find out more info before I jump on it, it belongs to my buddy so I've got plenty of time to make my decision lol I know its had a lot of steel cased ammo through it, I've heard of extractor problems from steel cased with ARs is that something I should look into????

MASSACHUSETTS CUSTOMERS: No sales of ammunition or magazines. No high capacity magazine sales to anyone or dealer in MA.

So much for suggesting a Website to help you out.....What a bunch of....a monopoly to control the people. Id say it is time for a drive across state lines to stock up and keep from being ripped off.

I had a olympic Arms Car 97 it had a gaurnatee to feed fire and eject there is a reason for this gaurantee and a reason why I no longer own a Oly. I would look for a SKS that was beat up and wore out over a OLY arms. But that is my own opinion on Oly. I would consider a AR by a different manufacture before purchasing this. IMO:thumb:

Thats true its almost like everyone has to have one of the ABCs of the AR world.

I get flack about my kit built gun cause its Akpartskit (AKA Black Thorn) and I tell you if anyone wants to go shot for shot and see if and when they jam I will do that.

You bring the ammo.:thumb:

I would have jumped on that if I had the money already as thats a heck of a deal. Im not sure you can get an AK for that right now.

Colorado, the OP's not asking about which is the "best" or, the "better" milspec AR's:

Is 500 dollars a good deal for a used Olympic Arms AR-15 with a couple magazines? I've read on other forums that olympic arms is a brand to avoid, this would be my first AR-15 and I was just wondering what you guys think. Is it a dependable shtf rifle? Should I jump on this or its better just to save up for a better make?...
The OP was asking if the Oly was a decent AR for $500.00 = and, it is.

It is a dependable and reliable plinker. It is worth the $500.00. It is not a brand to "avoid".
There are many "plinker" AR brands, besides Oly, out there.

If you (or the OP)wanst a reliable Main Battle Rifle AR, then, that's a whole different story, all together.
But, that wasn't the OP's question.
