I wanted to share with you about my old car, Its a 1984 VW diesel. I have got as high as 57 MPG by coasting down every hill I come to. Normal driving usually gets 48-51 mpg.
Another great thing about these old VW's is I have ran my car off almost straight motor oil. I mix about a cup of gasoline to 2 gallons of oil.
With regular maintenance these old diesels can get400K miles and possible more.
I have never used burnt motor oil but I think it would do fine as long as it was filtered very well. I think veg oil would do decent in a pinch as long as it's very clean and mixed with 50/50% diesel or say 85/15% veg oil/gasoline.
The Suzuki Samurai would be another great bug out vehicle and someone makes a kit to convert the powerplant to a VW diesel. You would have 4 wheel drive and 40 plus MPG.
Lastly, the 4BT Cummins has been converted into almost every mid and full size truck and SUV there is. It is a 3.9 liter 4 cyl turbo diesel and some claim high 40 MPG. There are adapters to mate the Cummins diesel to most Ford GM and Dodge pick ups and SUV. Manual trans conversions are easier.
I have never done a diesel conversion but I have done many 4 cyl to V8 conversions. If anyone is interested, I will be glad to share the little I know. I could also probably dig up some links.
