NY Gun Owners...are you moving?

I live in Western New York. My wife and I are now looking at other states. We are willing to pack up, take our kids from family and friends, shut down our company, and get out.

We are looking at VA, TN, NC, KY, and WV.

I do have some family in Western VA, so being in VA or WV would be easiest.

I am from IN, so NY means nothing to me, but to my wife and kids, its home.

We are not considering this move just because of the gun ban, but because the gun ban is the last straw. Insanely high taxes, high fuel costs, poor public education, over abuse of welfare, the state is broke...and broken, so much corruption in local and state government, lack of personal freedoms, etc etc...

My question is to the other NY'ers on here...are you moving out yet? Are you thinking about it, or are you still holding on to hope that things may get better through elections?

I am moving from California to the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia in the next few months.

My property taxes in California is $3,000.00 per year and in West Virginia will be about $300.00 per year.

My Car Registration in California is $600.00 per year and in West Virginia will be $30.00 per year.

My Truck Registration in California is $300.00 per year and in West Virginia will be $30.00 per year.

I live on a postage stamp lot 0.19 acres in California and will be purchase something with 2 or more acres in West Virginia.

I live in the great schit-hole of WA state. That said, I am from NY and miss it dearly, but consider myself blessed I don't live there anymore. (Was stationed in SoCal for a bit too, so I feel you pain there too.)

When considering your exodus for reasons of liberty you should consult this following study.

The Mercatus Institute's "Freedom in the 50 States"

This is an index of liberty (fiscal and personal) and comparison by state. It's really helpful. It's also something that I look at regularly in planning my exodus from Washingslum.

This index is two years old, A new one should be coming out this spring.

Hey, come to Kentucky. I don't see anyone who is going to take the guns from these good ole boys ;)

P.S. I left New York for all of the reasons you mentioned and then some.

A-Team, I agree with your statement that people are leaving Komiformia. I have run into 3 different type arriving in my current area. The 1st type are those that could not stand the continued problems that was placed on living there. Taxes, loss of personal freedoms and threat to their safety. The second group is the slightly better off that sold their homes and moved out to an area where they can do better, business owners and such. These are the ones that cant understand that we do things differently in our part of the country. They want changes to our ways and laws. the last group I see everyday when I pass the welfare building. Komiformia plates on their cars lining up for their freebees. Then at the food stores getting there supply of snack foods complaining that they dont get as much foodstamps as they did in Komiformia. But there are more jobs they can work at out in the fields for cash and they can live cheaper in the rentals with Hud helping them. These are the same people that will stand there and tell you to your face its their right to be helped to raise their 4 to 6 kids. Because they cant afford to raise them their selves. Its all about their choices. They have destroyed one place and now move onto another. Some will adapt and become a viable help and productive member of their new home others will suck it dry while complaining and move on. My point being the good move and the bad move also. Its just that their a hell of a lot more of the bad and the Corrupt government loves the bad because they are the ones that continue to elect the Corrupt governments.

For now I am stuck here in the People's Republic of NY for a couple of reasons. I am very upset over this new gun law but I am reassured by several local Sheriff's and DA's coming out to say that they won't be enforcing or prosecuting it. I think if it isn't overturned first that this will blow up in Cuomo's face when no one comes out to register their rifles.

For now I guess I am stuck here behind enemy lines. :thumb:

My wife and I have been visiting, KY, TN, VA and WV all great places with lower taxes and more freedom to just live and breath. KY is the friendliest to they're retired folks. Again all have been great as we are looking for our place in the sun as we get closer to retiring and getting away from the craziness of NJ taxes, political corruption and handout abuse.

They didn't seem to care very much when Tom Golisano packed up and headed to Florida due to high taxes. Then again, I didn't care either since he's a big buddy of Bloomberg.

Out of those states I would choose KY or TN. I am stationed in Nc now, trust me you don't want to move here. Better in western NC but they have some wacky lawshere as well, and i think getting your vehicle inspected is absoloutely stupid. I have famiy in the tri state area of WV,OH,KY, I WOULD NOT move to WV. Also VA is a swing state going down hill. I'd rather live in SC than NC, much better. Better yet though, move to Alabama!

I hail from Chicago, moved to FL panhandle a while back, spent about two years in Detroit, went back to FL, and am now in NC. - Hands down, FL has some of the best 2A-related laws, but the job opportunity isn't great there.

NC 2A laws are okay, but not great, and not nearly as good as FL. - Taxes are higher than I was paying in FL, most things cost more, but the job opportunity is solid, it's a growing area, we finally booted the lib-governor, and things seem to be changing for the better.

TX is great. TN is okay, VA has some cool areas. - I can't speak for living in any of these areas though.

I travel a lot with my wife, and there is simply no perfect place. You have to give up some things for other things. I would never move to a state that didn't allow CC, but I'm also not going to give up job opportunity, growth and my family's happiness for "the best" CC laws.

I live in SC and think it's pretty good (although no place is perfect!), so I would recommend that you consider it. Of the states on your list, KY and TN are pretty good; NC is a mixed bag (a lot more liberal than you might think); VA the same (the proximity to DC affects the overall state, although the western end is pretty good); and WV overall is quite leftist (although good about guns). You might consider Texas, too.
