My apologies if there's already a thread on this...

I was wondering if anyone knew anything further about Matt Graham, other than the little bit last weeks episode showed. I'm sad to see Cody go but am really intrigued with the new guy. I learned from a quick google search that he has already been on a couple shows, neither of which I have seen. I know a lot of people on here follow these survival folks much more than I do.

I have seen the guy on the "Dude you're screwed" show a few times. He seems to be squared away for the most part.

Cody is, I am certain, a fine survival instructor in the desert. He makes fire as good as anyone I have seen, however, him not wearing shoes and some of the other stuff he does is, in my opinion, irresponsible. IMO, it was all for shock effect and for ratings. Once they went in an Arctic environment, even Rocky Mountains, in season one and he put on socks but not long pants... I started calling it "Tool Survival." Put some freakin' pants and shoes on!

If your feet are tough enough to handle the elements, that's great. I can sit in a tree stand, hunting, at 32 degreees with nothing but a thin shirt on and survive. Would that make me tough? No! It would make me dumb. For that reason, I would wear a coat, at least a Jacket.

I think the show will be fine and I think all the drama with Cody will not be missed by most people. I am sure the producers will try to show all the major differences between Joe and the new guy to make good ratings. After all, it is TV.

The no shoes thing never really bothered me. If that's how he chooses to get around then so be it. Some folks get really particular about things and develop habits that they will not change no matter what. Cody is apparently one such person.

The new guy seems a little eccentric as well. All the clips I'm seeing with him he is shirtless and wearing a loin cloth and chucking spears and praying to Gaia. Although he seems to be inventive and perhaps a bit more physical than Cody. And he doesn't appear to be NEARLY as sarcastic as Cody...

I'm sooo glad CL is gone. He's the reason I didn't watch the first season with out Dave C on it.
I've seen all the episodes of Dude You're Screwed and Matt Graham knows his stuff and he's smart enough to dress appropriately for the weather and conditions. Doesn't go barefoot everywhere he walks when common sense says put some damn shoes on!
He's also an atlatl master so I'm sure he'll be ready actually hunt for some real food and not insist on eating bugs and roots to survive. CL couldn't kill a guinea bird at 10 paces with a wrist rocket on one episode. Another instance where common sense would have gotten them well fed. I was yelling at the TV the whole time "make a freakin' rabbit stick for crying out loud!!" IMHO everyone should learn to make and use a rabbit stick since it is easy to make and use and it's multipurpose and doesn't weigh much.

I admit I have not hunted rabbits with a rabbit stick or a wrist rocket. I have tried my marksmanship skills with a wrist rocket and not had much success. But I don't have much experience with a wrist rocket either. I can throw pretty well though and the rabbit stick is a weapon that was used by native peoples for a really long time to successfully hunt small game It's similar to a boomerang in that you throw it sidearm and let the end around end rotation do the work and make up for any lack of skill you may have.
It the instance I was referring to I'm positive I could have at least stunned the guinea fowl CL was hunting especially if I was able to get as close as he did before he even tried to take the shot. I could have hit the bird in the head with my rabbit stick at that range and at least stunned it.
And since CL can't hunt why was he the one taking the shot instead of Joe?

That's why I say easier said than done. The problem with a rabbit stick is rabbits are very low lying to the ground. And any type of bush, shrub, tree, or tall grass sticking up can impede the stick on its way to the target. Also, the animal could move out of the way, particularly animals that aren't rabbits. A rabbit will usually try to just sit still, but most other animals will spook if they see you throw something at them. Nothing wrong with postulating, but unless you have first hand experience with this stuff then you won't know all the reasons why it would be likely to fail. But in theory if you had a good heavy stick and practiced, you might be able to get a clean shot off at an animal and who knows, it could work.

I don't remember why Cody was the one shooting. Maybe he was trying to give it a go to see if he could do it. Sort of like the way they take turns making fire in episodes. Clearly Cody should've been doing it every time, but sometimes Joe took turns with that task.

My son has been following Matt Graham for a while and is really impressed with him (for a 15 year old:D:). He's pretty stoked regardless.

It'll be interesting, but I expect a decent show. I do like Cody Lundin, but he's been getting a little cantankerous the last season or so.

Survival drama...not the best, but I guess it draws in some folks. I'm looking forward to some decent stuff out of Matt Graham.

I read the reasons for Dave being let go, and understand them.

Joe doesn't have nearly the knowledge that Dave did though. He has a personality that conflicts well with others to gain ratings a "raging type A" as he described it. The knife he designed showed me that he is far more tactical minded than survival minded. I felt I learned more useful information from Dave, and they actually took meat much more often with him. I have nothing against Joe, I just don't feel that he is a great instructor of survival skills/tactics. He is definitely a hard working go-getter, physical and mentally tough, and that goes a long way for him. I too would get real frustrated with Cody at times where his lack of clothing makes him a liability or slows them down.

I've seen Matt on Dude your Screwed. I think he will be an interesting pairing with Joe, he really knows his stuff and Joe won't be able to outwalk or outwork him. I think his knowledge will swamp Joe's. I'd love to see Matt and Terry or the SAS guy from Dude Your Screwed on a dual survival show. Not as much fireworks, but lots more real knowledge.

I wouldn't mind seeing Matt and the old crafty guy from Dude You're Screwed. I think those two would make a good team. The old pathfinder and the younger primitive type.

Not to mention the Rabbit Stick Festival.

I got to see the first new episode last night. As expected, from "Dude, You're Screwed" Matt is a younger, stronger version of Cody. His skill with an adladl was impressive. He is great with fire and lots of other primitive skills. He is cheerful, with a positive attitude. He was so good in the Tropics that he looked like he was on vacation and did not really want to get rescued. That is rare on these goofy shows. I like his reverence for animals, so far he is my favorite survival guy yet.

Joe T has his own set of skills, but suffers from the military overhang. Everything is gung ho all the time. He wastes a lot of energy and creates conflict when there doesn't need to be any. On a long, difficult trip in the outdoors which every survival situation tends to be, Matt has a great mental outlook. He defuses tense situations and leads by example. He provides for others.

I used to put field crews together for long, difficult jobs a long way from town. I started to recruit for attitude as much as skill. One whiner or pessimist can really wreck a trip. I am putting together a week long canoe trip. We are up to 8 people but they are all field tested with the positive outlook and consideration for the group. It makes all the difference.

I saw the first episode with Matt Graham last night. What a breath of fresh air! Even when Joe was "DON'T DRINK THE WATER!" Matt was cool about it. "Take it easy. I've done this a thousand times. But it's ok. If you want to boil it first, that's cool too."
Situation defused. CL would have gotten into a huge conflict over it and wasted a whole segment of the show arguing why it was fine to drink the water and how Joe doesn't have the experience to know better.
Matt has most likely forgotten more about living in the wild long term than CL will ever know. He was on vacation and prepared to stay there long term while Joe was practically panicking about getting rescued. I get the feeling Joe hasn't spent a lot of time in the woods outside the military. Probably born and raised a city boy.

I had a little chuckle at the end. Matt was on the island for 3 weeks before Joe got there. Then, when it was time to try to get rescued, Matt wanted to stay longer.

I like Matt tons more than Lundin. Lundin doesn't have a clue about what the word "compromise" means and has to have his way every time. Matt is much more respectful and considerate of his partner.

Also, while Lundin teaches primitive survival, he lives in a fairly modern house. Matt lives a totally primitive lifestyle all the time. Surviving on that island wasn't a survival situation for Matt, it was a vacation from his usual lifestyle. LOL

Matt has every primitive skill Lundin has, plus the ability to make and use primitive weapons and is a world champ with the atlatl. Lundin would be eating grubs and worms while Matt is having pork smoked in a pit.

Matt doesn't go barefoot and there's a big difference between wearing sandals and being barefoot. Matt also trains constantly with distance running in cross-country type situations. Joe doesn't have to worry about Matt being slow like Lundin. If they are in a hurry, Joe won't be able to keep up with Matt.

I'm thrilled to see Matt on any show and it's even better he's replacing Lundin.

I also watched last nights episode with Matt, and like you said, it sure was nice to see 2 guys have a difference in opinion, but not have to have a fight about it. Matt even took it a step further and boiled the water for him himself while Joe was off making a rescue fire setup.

I would love to see a Man vs Wild style show with just Matt. I think he could make a survival show with extra camera men work. Joe is essentially just there to do cool action shots and be Mr. Tough, in my opinion. Especially with all that Matt appears to be able to do

The no shoes thing was a bit of a 'huh?' moment to me too, but what the hell, if that's how he rolls....I've experimented with 'no shoes' for stalking trout in shallow creeks. Bugs bit me and sharp gravel is a drag. Went back to my wading boots with neoprene liners, comfy!

Most survival shows just bug me, all action and drama and improbable solutions to fairly simple situations. Some years back NZ (much to my shame) hopped on the 'reality' bandwagon and made a desert island survivor type dealie. There were the usual 2nd string celebs, wide boys and princesses who spent their time building rickety cabanas on the beach then moaning about the lack of food.

The one saving grace of the whole sorry show was an interesting guy named Horse. Ex NZSAS, hunter and general outdoor guy. He'd go for walks between challenges and always come back with something to eat, berries, random fruit, seafood etc while noting alternate camp sites, creeks etc. He seldom took part in the nightly bitch sessions when bellies are growling and another night sleeping on the sand while hoping it doesnt rain.

The twist to the show was that every few days they had to vote a new camp leader. There was the usual "Vote for me and be treated with respect" type election promises but my favorite was Horse's pitch "I am Horse! Vote for me and eat!"

Then he somehow got kicked off the island and I lost interest.

I have to say I was a bit suspicious or Matt when I first heard about it; even more so when I saw the first few minutes of his appearance on the show. My first thought was "surfer". But the more Joe asked him and the more Matt showed him around it was immediately apparent that he was incredibly skilled.

The real turning point was the water. He didn't argue, he didn't bitch to the camera, he didn't even get a butthurt look on his face. He politely said he'd done it before but he was willing to sanitize it for both of them just in case. That's a man who knows what the score is. Type A personality willing to receive criticism. I immediately revised my opinion of the man and watched the rest of the episode.

Ladies and gentlemen may I present DUAL survival.

This is simple addition by subtraction. The show immediately improved the moment Matt stepped in. No more arrogance, no more diva behavior, no more "I've been doing this for 20 such and such years and I'm an expert" bull****.
As far as I'm concerned CL isn't fit to lace up Matt's sandals and if Joe will slow it down a step, I think the show will be almost as good as when it started with Dave. Dave and Matt would have been the perfect team for this show.
I think it would be hilarious to see Mick Dodge and Joe do a couple shows in the Ho forest though. Mick's sense of humor might drive Joe over the edge though lol.

The show is a fake. Near as I can tell, Mick Dodge doesn't claim to be a wilderness expert or survivalist nor teach those subjects. He is a "earth-gym" hippy type who teaches "philosophy" and physical fitness (earth gym). It's the TV channel (I forget whether it's on Discovery or Nat Geo) and the show's producers who are pushing the survivalist slant.

I posted an article in one or two of the Mick Dodge threads that pointed out what he's reeally like, really does, and the differences he has with the people who produce the show (such as the producers making him wear his buckskins in the wet weather when he normally wears modern stuff when it's that wet out).
