Just seen this on Fox News, didn't see it posted here. They're saying that "explosions are imminent" and they are evacuating everybody in the area. Lots of hazardous materials on board. Been burning since Friday but today is the first time i've heard about it on the news.

Hope the neighborhood and the farm animals remain unharmed. I wonder if it was carelessness on the part of the conductor or if sabotage came into play or if it was just weather related.

Vinyl Chloride

Hazards

Fire Hazard
Special Hazards of Combustion Products: Forms highly toxic combustion products such as hydrogen chloride, phosgene, and carbon monoxide.

INHALATION: high concentrations cause dizziness, anesthesia, lung irritation. SKIN: may cause frostbite; phenol inhibitor may be absorbed through skin if large amounts of liquid evaporate. (USCG, 1999)

Carbon Monoxide (As Fire Byproduct)

Hydrogen Chloride (As Byproduct)

Phosgene (as byproduct) [Most Significant Health Hazard]

Health Hazard
Phosgene is a lung toxicant that causes damage to the capillaries, bronchioles and alveoli of the lungs, by decomposition to hydrochloric acid. There is little immediate irritant effect upon the respiratory tract, and the warning properties of the gas are therefore very slight. Pulmonary edema, bronchopneumonia and occasionally lung abscesses develop. Degenerative changes in the nerves have been reported as later developments. A concentration of 25 ppm is dangerous for exposures lasting 30-60 minutes and 50 ppm is rapidly fatal after even short exposure. (EPA, 1998)

PPE Recommendations:

Tychem C3 or better (Minimum for Phosgene) [not to be used around fire]
SCBA for IDLH or APF50 Full-Face Respirator for escape

From what I was told, they could not recover 5 cars, so they set charges to vent/burn them. Cleanup of the rail cars should start today.

This occurred about 17 miles SE from my house. I honestly didn’t even know about it until Monday morning, the 4th day. My aversion to consuming the propaganda of the mass media bit me
on the butt as I was caught unawares. No bad effects….this time… probably need to rethink just how disconnected from media I get.

There was a mandatory evacuation for a 1 mile radius around the wreak and more than a few folks left with only the clothes on their backs. Really drives home the need to have some sort of go bag ready with a least a minimum of meds, cash etc.. JIC. Think I’m gonna use this as a very direct warning to do just that.

I also hate the news. Many States and Counties have emergency apps that can send you push notifications. The Red Cross has one as well for local events and disasters. Not sure if this is your County but they have an alert system in place EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT
Montgomery County offers free CodeRED high-speed notifications. This emergency alert system sends severe and urgent Emergency Management and National Weather Service messages to residents and businesses by landline, cell phone, text message and email.

I saw a local news feed interviewing a resident who's chickens died shortly after the CONTROLED burn they did. The chickens were in a coop and no sign of predator's , also others in the next county were complaining of smell and burning eyes.
there's something going on the bald guy is the local fire chief and he looks pissed.

Ok not the video wear he was hot under the collar can't find that one. but here's is the chicken lady.

Chief is sleeping on a cot wherever they set up HQ, if he's sleeping at all, so I'd be short-tempered too. Also, it's his city, but he's not running the show. After the dog and pony show ends, he and the other locals will be stuck with the mess, and all the others "leading" the event will be gone. A lot of us have/had FEMA certification, and the thing they pound into your head is: they're in charge. Even my role in local gov, we don't have the resources for something like this, but also don't want the Feds running things around here. I'd be pissed too. Remember Katrina, I was mobilized for it... before folks could go down, they had to complete mandatory federal training (diversity, sexual harassment, the usual bull****).

Back in the 80’s, a female employee of the (then) Illinois Central RR was allowed to dead-head( ride free) in the locomotive cab..The engineer was a moron and let her drive…they derailed in downtown Livingston La..All sorts of nasty stuff caused the town to be evacuated for several weeks..
Engineer did federal prison time..hers was suspended..I never knew how much the RR insurers paid…
Just because someone is a ‘train engineer’ doesn’t mean they aren’t an idiot…
