Longview is about the second largest city in N East Texas, ~90K population. But at the area the cat was killed it isn't far from the Sabine River bottom (about two miles). It doesn't really surprise to hear about the big cats, even though Tx P&W figure it's about two to three years old, but it does surprise me it's this far in, there's a large middle school and stadium just down the road.

Not surprising to me at all.
I've seen em in the Neches bottoms,
The Sabine bottoms, the Trinity
bottoms, and the Sulphur and
Angelina bottoms.
TPWD doesn't like to tell the truth
about everything that roams around
the state.
IMO they're afraid of some ranchers
making livestock depredation claims.
Most of the big cats I've seen were
around Houston and Anderson counties.
They won't say it, but the black bears
have made their way back in from
LA and ARK. There's good clear sign
all over the creek bottom, and
neighbors have them on game cameras. Those are about like
a 200 pound coon tearing up stuff.

Before I knew for sure and saw, there's no telling how many times I'd walked
in the dark going to or from a hunting
spot and a big cat was laid up in a
tree and I passed underneath it
without a clue

We have them around here but we have never seen one on our property. Black bears are a different story, one ripped the wall off our chicken coup and got six chickens. We have had bear, raccoons, skunks, fox, coyote, deer, turkeys, bobcat (I had a tug-o-war with one over a chicken. He had the head and I had the feet and I was beating the cat with a stick until he gave up. The cat and the chicken both lost).

Parts of Longview see lots of wildlife. Gracey Creek, the main drainage for the city runs thru the middle of town and terminates about two miles south of town when it runs into Sabine River. Where I live, about three blocks from Gracey Creek, several years ago one night we had a eight point buck in the back yard inside our four ft chain link fence. A Church a couple of blocks away has big field next to it they use for various sports, I've driven down past it at night and have seen as many as six or seven deer or a sounder of hogs feeding in it.
