Yep-Price is up all over, but yesterday I found a sweet deal
I've been back in the market for one in the past year & have been really surprised at the price. I bought a 91/30 more than a decade ago, hit some rough patches & had to sell it. I only paid $69.95 for it shipped + a $25 FFL transfer fee.
It really was a good shooter & I've kicked myself several times over for letting it go; especially as I've watch the price go up & up.
Well, I was on FL Gun Trader the other day & found one a guy in town was selling. I got it for $105 w/ all the tools, a bit of ammo, some extra pouches & even an aftermarket rear site scope mount (looks like ATI). I feel fortunate. The stock is all beat to heck, but the rifling is in excellent condition & all the metal parts are in good shape. I tore it down last night & cataloged ALL the factory/inspection marks (for my own fun & curiosity)..... got an 800X digital microscope & love to do "small" photography. This was a lesson in patience - I ended up w/ 120 pics (had to take 2-3 of just a few), so there must have be right around 100 marks/stamps on it (that's barrel/receiver/stock/trigger/butt plate/bayonet/barrel rings/rear sight/bolt/magazine - pretty much everything I could get to w/ a bit more than just field strip, but not complete tear down). I also did 5 videos for the import etching.
Then, I managed to get an awesome deal on one of the ProMag stocks - I knew I'd eventually want to do it, but total package for less then $80 (shipped) w/ the basic 5 round AND a 10 round magazine.... I pushed it & spent the money. I know that deal wouldn't have lasted long on ebay. Just being able to have the detachable magazines is a huge convenience for these arthritic hands. I can over time buy more of them & load them at my convenience.
I will have to wait to buy any reasonable amount of ammo, but at least I've got some rounds w/ it. Obviously, when I sold my 1st one, I sold the spam cans of ammo w/ it, since I didn't think I'd be getting another 91/30.
Talk about a price jump -- that ammo has jumped % wise even more than the guns themselves. I about choked when I started scoping out the spam cans, knowing I was going to look at this gun.
All in all, I feel I got a good deal for all I'm going to be doing w/ it. I'm excited to try the ProMag stock. It's been well reviewed & allows for some tweaks that I think will be nice. It will definitely help me over the factory stock since I have issues w/ my short arms on so many of the longer rifles. Fortunately, I have several scopes laying around that are more than enough for my current distance capabilities, so other than either making or buying a scope mount that isn't on the rear sight - I've got everything I want for a 91/30 - - All under $200 (picked up locally or shipping included). I figure w/ so many sites selling them for upwards of $150 w/ no extras + S&H; I did pretty good. Heck, just the ammo that came w/ it - nice stuff, is probably about $20 + S&H per 20 & there's over 50 rounds.
It does help that I sold a pair of pellet guns (rifle & pistol) for $50 yesterday morning (sweetened the deal getting hubby on board for the rifle purchase knowing that I'd get almost half the money for it from those)

: He's not a big shooter, but he is pretty well reasoned when I talk to him about adding a gun. It helps that I've never lost money on any thing I've sold in regards to gun stuff. Sometimes break-even, but no deficits. Of course, hubby doesn't know I bought the ProMag stock yet

. I'm gonna wait to lay that one on him.
