I'm thinking of buying a Mosin Nagant from Cabelas and wanted to know what you guys think about it as a survival/fun gun? I know alot about this gun but any other info would be greatly appreciated.

**** down your barrel after if you want to get rid of the corrosion. It should not be a deal breaker..:)

Where can you still find ammo at that price? I'd love a link. I can still find 91/30s for $120 but only know of a few. (and that was two days ago, I haven't checked today.)
Sarge, for the life of me ,I can't remember where I got mine, but you can search my posts. I got the crate, two spam cans, opener w/ 880 rounds shipped by UPS for $160 (give or take $10). My UPS guy is an acquaintance and just shakes his head. ;)

If you can find an M-44 or M-39 (carbine version) it is a little easier to maneuver.
If they ban the import of surplus ammo, it might be a little harder to find. My local store still has some @ $8 for 20.

BTW, welcome to the board, not quite sure what you poll has to do with the topic at hand.

Can you survive with it? You betcha:thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb:

Why would you be better off with a rifle over a carbine? I've found that my M44 is far more accurate than my rifle (was) and the muzzle velocity loss when going with the carbine is negligeable. Shot grouping has also been proven better in a carbine length Mosin when compared to the atiquated rifle length Mosin (which was originally designed for use with a blackpowder cartridge, hence the extreme length)

Anyways, if you want a good shooting Mosin, find yourself a 91/30, hack 8" off the barrel and sporterize the original stock or find an ATI or M44 stock for it and you're good to go!

400 yards is an easy shooting distance for a scoped 91/30, and with some accurizing, you can reach out even further.

I think you will find answers as varied as the individuals on this board

while the moisan is somewhat heavy it is not that far off most rifles of its caliber in weight
8.8lbs for the 91/30
7lbs marlin 336 (30-30win)
8lbs rem 700 bd.
6.36lbs m4 carbine
this is all without optics or other fun things

so as you can see the bdl is pretty close in weight the other two are carbines that said ammo for the nagant is around $79 per can of 440 rounds and you can shoot 500m with iron sights all day long corrosive ammo is not a problem unless you are lazy and dont clean your equipment

its a fun little gun and while it might not be a high dollar competition gun its definitely not a bad little shooter

$300+ unless it's a Chinese type 53, and most of them come complete with "dark but shootable bores," so they are pretty much wallhangers.
x2 on the shotgun. buckshot for people, slugs for bigger game, smaller shot for small animals and birds. styles and ammo plentiful depending on your location.
Shotgun would be completely useless for hunting anything but birds and bunnies where I'm from. A 200 yard shot at a deer is considered a close shot around here.

I bought one about a month ago, ammo isn't generally a problem to find under normal circumstances. As mention clean good right after using the corrosive stuff, its a fun gun, pretty accurate. I believe it will get you meat to eat without any problem and o yeah get the bayonet, long and cool looking but don't store on the gun, it would really hurt if you accidently back into it. AS a survival gun there are better choice but for 99-175 bucks how could you go wrong.

As far as for self preservation consider that during the Russian civil war the Reds and the Whites dragged their MNs over some of the harshest land on the planet and were still fighting in some regions when WWii broke out. The trigger spring will break, been there done that. So you might want to pick up a spring set or just buy two. There are still some tight bores out there. But there are some real beaters too. Know what to look for.

That poll is like asking which of my kids I love the most. As far as mosin's, they have thier place. I think every prepper should have a couple lying around. They are great guns to keep for arming family and friends who are ill prepared. What other large centerfire rifle can you practice with that has ammo priced at $4 a box? They are great guns to have, but definetely not the best primary weapon.

With a Mosin, you can make holes in most things you might run up against, deafen enemies with the sound, roast them with the fire ball, run them through with the bayonet, beat them to a pulp with any part of the rifle without damaging it, and have little fear of a malfunction or jam. :thumb:

On the flip side, your shoulder will turn black and purple... And you may wind up being able to clap your shoulder blades together... :(

Addicting, hold onto your wallet!

I searched high and low online for the $99 mosin nagant, and I can tell you they are all gone right now. I was able to buy Russian M44's from Aimsurplus for $179 + shipping a few weeks ago, but they sold out of them in about 10 days.

check out sgammo.com for great prices on 7.62x54. Prices have gone up about $10 per 880 since the crisis.

Word of warning, you will not be able to stop buying them once you get one. I just picked up an original mosin nagant 91/30 PU sniper for $630 yesterday.

LOL. Yes extra amounts of self restraint are necessary not to buy more. :D:

By the way I just wanted to point out that the 7.62x5x goes right through
Brick, Concrete and Metal pretty easily. Just because something ducks behind a
wall for cover doesn't mean it's safe. 7.62x51 & 54R go right through tracks, cars, houses, I beams.

no way i'd sell my m44 for under $200 now. not chinese, all matching numbers, and very good condition. i, too, got mine about 3-4 years ago when there were lots of them and cheap. now, finding even a chinese 53 knock-off will cost you close to $200 in many places. absolutely crazy.
kinda reminds me of the big housing bubble right before it burst. i expect the same thing to happen to rifle and ammo prices after the nra and congress is done gutting any real 2a proposals.
