An organized militia will ONLY be seen as a threat to the Gov'mnt, it makes you a target. If you want to join a group fine, keep it quite, don't go on TV, keep it local, don't advertise that you even exist. When the crisis comes and you're needed you work within your community, don't act like you want to take over.

hahahaha...thats exactly what I thought!

The show really does show the overweight wannabe Rambo side of things. Why couldn't they find a legitimate militia (one that can actually setup a freaking shelter and not have magazines fall out of your rifle at the range).

IMO the people they showed just wanted to scream " HEY GOVERNMENT, PLEASE PUT ME ON YOUR LIST!"

Wow, my friends think I'm crazy ? Looks like a bunch of over dramatized crap. They all know there being filmed, hence the little smirks on all their faces. It's just Discovery Channel B.S. like Doomsday Preppers and the like. Showing the the craziest most extreem and calling it normal for "these people". P!sses me off. Unreality TV. No thanks.

The members of this forum are quite the paranoid bunch, and probably rightfully so. I'm becoming the same way. One thing I'm not understanding, though (a few, actually), is what you think your role is WTSHTF vis-a-vis your community, and on a larger scale the country.

Some have mentioned being in a publicized militia will get you on a govt. list; I agree. But they also say that after TSHTF, those who can will bear arms for the community. Wouldn't that also get you on a list, or do you feel that by that time the lists will all be so much tinder.

It seems that many of the members here are prepared, and possibly prefer, to go it alone WTSHTF, but surely that can't be right. It's not human nature to be alone. Am I not reading between the lines, or maybe overthinking it?

Just tryin' to wrap my head around the psychology of TSHingTF.....

Just don't use the word militia if it buzzes your noodle, call it 'good citizen's help-group' or 'good guys with guns' or even 'armed community folk' etc etc.

Well I'm not ashamed I'm a member in Michigan. The TV crowd didn't do it justice, they raely do. Many members do not want the publicity. I have looked into this group long before joining group and what I've found in my state is very family oriented, survival skill training, I have yet to see any gung ho freaks in our state. The FPG program they showed is to help members family in SHTF senarios either man made or natural, if you have family members in a different state than where you live and their is a Watchmen available they will look after your family members keep them safe until they return. Your own state will assist you in a disaster. No felons are allowed to become members.
Everyones welcome to their opinion I have thick skin, theres doer's and talkers.

Did the three groups use the word militia to describe themselves? They called themselves Watchmen. They talked about the role of militias in our countries history and the Militia Acts of 1792 and the one that replaced it in 1903. I think Discovery called them militias just like Nat Geo tagged all preppers as doomsdayers.

The two non Texas groups were not much different from my group other than all the camo and giving people rank. That had to be all for tv as the total absence of squared away individuals seemed odd. We have guys in our group who will not be handed weapons until absolutely necessary.

The Texas group was total tv sensationalism. They hid their identities so no one would laugh at them. I bet that out of shape group didn't walk a 100 yards away from their vehicles.

EDIT: When I say Texas I mean Arizona.
