i know there arent supposed to be cougars in michigan, at least according to the dnr. but in northern michigan where i camp i see one every few years. i even have a trail camera picture of one. the dnr spends a lot of time in the woods, so do you think they are lying? why would they cover something like that up? tell me your ideas about it.

We have them in MN but no population according to the DNR. They are here but mostly in the north, northwest, and northeast. A trailcam snapped a pic of one only 12 miles southwest of our cabin up off the northshore north of Duluth a few years ago.

Many have been spotted in Wisconsin and actually filmed. A buddy I hunt with has pics of his co-worker with a big dead male cougar he hit with his Chevy truck over in Wisconsin. The DNR actually let him keep it. The paw out stretched is larger than his head!

My friends in Northwest Bemidji MN see one at least once a year.

I believe it very possible for them to be even in mainland North Michigan.

Since you aren't known to have a "breeding population" you don't have real cougars but an imitation cougar.
Apparently they are completely harmless with rubberized teeth and child safe blunt claws.

I would like to understand their definition of "population".

But, they won't be concerned. There could be a thousand males as long as there are no females, there is no "population".

They just don't like women.

Im pretty sure I saw one thirty years ago around the Roscommod/ West Branch area in Lower Michigan. My brother and I were logging in that area and were riding down the road, I glanced out the window and swear I saw a cougar standing by a small creek. My brother kind of laughed at me and said there werent any cougars in Michigan but thirty years later I still believe what I saw was a cougar.

There have been sightings in the twin cities metro area here in MN. One was captured on trailcam down by the river feeding on a deer. The most recent metro sighting posted in the news was in the northeast metro in Vadnais Heights near I-694 a couple years ago. I am sure they are all just passing through but with all the deer we have it's kind of surprising there isn't a breeding population. The food and northern habitat is prime for them.

Here in Virginia, along the Blue Ridge people have seen tracks/sign, and the animals themselves, yet the Dept of Game and Inland Fisheries is the same way. They maintain that there are "no cougar or mountain lion in Virginia." I asked a DGIF employee about this, and he replied that they need to have "verifiable record" of "numbers" within the state to change their status. He said that seeing one or two every now and then could be "migratory" cats. Maybe your state is the same way.

Is that crazy or what?!?

I went up to my land in east central MN yesterday and found this picture on my trail cam. Is it a cougar? I thought it was a fox at first on my tiny LCD screen, but I don't think so now. The first shot is just of it's ears, the 2nd of the whole animal.

Seems the attachment system is broken right now, so I'll try to link to Flickr
