i have heard of them being made of leaf springs

 

as a knife maker i have been thinking about this myself. i got some 2inch steel for it. i gess all you need to do is shape it then put some scales "handles" on it then sharpen it the style is all up to you.thats my two cents worth.

 

Knife making really isn't that hard. Having the right tools helps a lot, however.
There are lots of videos out there of people making knives. The same principles apply to a machete.

 

Would an chainsaw guide bar work as a base?

If you make something out of a leaf spring you will get more of a short sword than a machete. Leaf springs are a lot thicker than normal machete metal. It can also be hard to take the bend out of the spring. There is good metal there but I think you will need a good sized forge and a lot of work to get the job done.

 

Hmm, interesting point... I wonder if I should just try to find some 1055 carbon sheets or not. I really want something that'll be long enough to use effectively. Reach is important, although I suppose I don't want it TOO long as I would like making a kukri or bolo style machete.

Cut the shape you want,put bevel on and drill holes for the handle then quench and temper it.

Its not so hard apparently.:thumb:

Just finished one about two weeks ago. I used an old power hack saw blade.I cut off both ends and used the top/back for the cutting edge. Ground slowly the metal keeps its spring temper. I kept the carbide saw teeth for sawing larger limbs,bones and whatever. Blade is 21 in. total length is around 28 in.
