It is to make it impossible for civilians to get surplus ammo inexpensively, and to shrink the production to prevent the manufacturer from producing more than military and law enforcement order, so it can't be sold cheaply and abundantly.

M855/SS109 is one of the most common forms of 5.56x45 ammunition currently, used in the most common types of rifles owned by the types of people most likely to resist government expansion and aggression. Anyone who thinks this isn't a shot across the bow is kidding themselves.

There's no body armor that M855 will pierce that standard lead-core .223 won't pierce. What's to stop them from declaring it devoid of "sporting purpose" tomorrow?

Legally, there appears to be nothing stopping them.

M855GT is classified as armor piercing capability. Except for hunting Cape buffalo or a critter with a comparable boss (headbone), or just feeling the need to pierce some body armor, why the hell would civilians NEED them ?

Velocity is what kills steel. Really, though, I have no clue what the advantage of M855 could possibly be. Like another stated, this is a supply/demand/logistics/sales issue, not a "good load taken off the market" issue.

The main reason I bought a bunch of it was it was more accurate in my 6920 than M193 for range use. Then the range banned it because "It is too damaging to the target stands".

Pure hogwash. AR handguns are such a miniscule and expensive part of AR based platform sales landscape that they cant even show one case where they were used by criminals.

Hell they couldnt even show officers getting hurt by AP ammo before the first ban Of AP ammo. As such this is BS legislation/rule making.

Where is M855 typically manufactured? Perhaps states that have passed "Second Amendment Protection Acts" whom manufacture ammo, will continue to produce M855.

At least I'm a frequent user of sportsman's guide and the checkout process was simple and quick. $.37 per round.

 

Did you get the PPU battle packs? I ordered one just for giggles. It was cheaper if you went through the ammo sale link than if you went through the normal process, which seemed a bit odd to me.
