I wanted to use this:
but it's not an option.
I've been quite vocal on social media since the election heated up, and in very large part due to me living in the Yankee northeast, my opinions are a minority view. Very few people on my social media positively respond to what I write.
What I have noticed is that people act as if one is "supposed" to act or believe a certain way/thing, and deviation is met with confusion, shock, or an attitude of you being something akin to an alien or a strange creature.
I finally lost a FB friend over this. He accused me, basically, of being on my way to fascism. He didn't even give me a chance to discuss this - and this considering we have many extremely dynamic and very informative (and polite) discussions. He just cut me off.
I'm finding that while I can always see I was wrong here or there, and while I'm always seeking to learn, that to live for others' approval just so I can have "friends" who really are not friends is foolish. Mine is definitely a "non-mainstream" viewpoint here in the New York City area. I don't agree with everything President Donald Trump has said or done since he announced his candidacy, but I believe with all my heart that his victory over Hillary Clinton will be good for America in the long term.
I have repeatedly pointed out the hypocrisies, dirty dealings, and war crimes of Clinton and I have also made unpopular statements on law enforcement, double-standards in the news (white kid being tortured by 4 black people), criticisms of BLM, and comments on immigration. I've never been hostile; energetic and passionate yes. I have never thrown insults.
I believe that the widespread and lingering censure extended to Trump supporters (violence, assaults, shaming, etc) before and after the election demonstrate the state of American culture in 2017: one "must" believe a certain set of ideas, and a deliberate refusal to do so is grounds for ostracism.
Fortunately, I have some real-life true friends who agree with me, and some who don't, but who are above writing me off just because I voted for somebody else.
Anybody here relate to this?
