I always appreciate seeing stories like this about private gun owners intervening on the side of the law. I wish we would see more of them.

However if this is how this police dept has been conducting itself in relation to this school, those members have been living on borrowed time. It is unbelievable that one lone officer should take it upon himself to break up a fight while surrounded by 40 teenagers and no backup. Either he was way off base and should be disciplined, or this police department has been a tragedy waiting to happen every day for years.

The fact that the follow-up announcement was that they will be "doubling their patrols" strongly suggests the latter.
Yeah during schooies where all the kiddies wnt to get out and fight. We see the cops in teams of four at least.

Breaking up a fight on your own has a high failure rate. And you wouldn't even try to arrest any one.

A review of this school posted on that web site:
"Absolutely amazing place to prepare you for the real world. From academics to extracurriculars Upper Darby does not get enough credit.
- Posted by Student/Alumni, 10/31/15"

I take it that by "extracurriculars" they mean rioting, fighting and taking on a cop. Great preparation for life in Ferguson, Baltimore, Detroit, Compton...

Kudos to the lawful gun owner; he took a big risk brandishing in front of a Philly cop, even if it was in the defense. Perhaps that single act will change a lot of minds in the blue line about citizens and firearms.

The district's graduation rate of 69% has decreased from 96% over five years.
... has nothing to do with it whatsoever, I'm sure.

Upper Darby. LOL. Lived in Philly for a bit downtown. Area just east of Darby (and surrounding, really) is absolute dogsh**.

Seriously driving through the area to the east of UD is reminiscent of Aleppo.

Not a place any of us would even want to get lost.

Wasn't too long ago that a guy was out walking his dog in the area and two teens decided they were going to culturally enrich him after playing basketball. Just shot the guy for no reason.

Good on this guy. He saved the cop no doubt. PPD and the surrounding jurisdictions are actually quite tolerant of LTCFs. Nutter, the last mayor, recognized their utility despite his blatant pandering to a certain voting bloc to get into office. He was tough on crime. The new mayor, well, another story.

Right. It sounds like he never had the gun concealed so no permit needed.

It is a good thing he did not fire a shot in the air or have to shoot any "students". I am sure things would have been different for him.

That is sad that only 69% graduate at a public high school. At the same time they are dumbing the education down and making it easier to get the kids through the program. They graduate kids with learning disabilities who play games all day at school, so there really is no excuse for not being able to graduate.

I've had citizens jump in a fight on my behalf.

Sometimes I've needed the help pretty badly. Other times, it seems like the bystander calculated that aiding me was a golden ticket at a free shot with total impunity, and jumped in. Either way, I appreciated it every time.

Nobody has ever pulled out a gun to help me though.
